No joke. I hit a nest yesterday while cutting the back side of a pond dam. I was in my excavator and just laughed at them. The cab is awesome.

I own a 25hp tractor with loader. It is awesome as a residential property tool but the temptation to overload the loader is pretty common. I’m not sure I’d trust myself in the woods with it. I’d get something 40-50hp for that

I really like the 30-40hp Kubotas and Mahindras. The Mahindras are more budget friendly, but everyone talks like the Kubotas are a the standard to beat.
Maybe the answer is just to save up for another year to get what I really need

Check out red dirt tractors in Alexandria. They sometimes have good used prices
My grandfathers old ford tractor (39hp) was a beast unfortunately it’s retired. My dad’s diesel tractor (30ish hp) is good but it doesn’t have the power to pull all the implements my grandfathers had I’ll be getting a 40hp+ next year.

just for reference I paid 16,000 for it new a couple years ago. Which I didn’t think was terrible and it’s plenty for what I need. I’m guessing for about the same you could find a used 40 maybe not a kubota but there’s other good ones, mines a bobcat/kioti and it’s been great

I found a 2024 Mahindra 1635 for 16.9K, which I thought was a pretty decent deal.
Just wasn’t sure how good some of the none JD/Kubota brands are

quote:Definitely get the R1 tires then, and make sure they're radials.
the tractor will essentially live at my camp up at the club.
Really going to be using it to manage the property (clean up trails, manage food plots, misc projects around the camp)
Don't get anything less than a 50 hp class tractor. If you buy a 35 hp class tractor, you will regret it eventually for what you're wanting to do.
I have HST, new and old shuttle shift, and regular old manual tractors. I do everything from pulling land planes to front end loader work, fertilizer, apply thousands of gallons of herbicides a year, do food plots, road work, batwing mowing - you name it - and I don't care what anyone says, I'd take every single tractor in HST and the acceptable horsepower loss that comes with it. Just make sure it has a cruise control stick if you're doing precision fertilizer/herbicide applications. If you plan on doing any front end loader work, HST is hands down the best, and it's not even close.
I would look for a Kubota L series in the 47-60 hp range. They're stripped down (less stuff to break) while having everything you need in a utility tractor for the camp. Make sure it has plenty of rear remotes for attachments you will start off with (although you can easily add these later), and having 3rd function on the FEL is a must if you're planning on having a grapple or 4-in-1 bucket (a 4-in-1 bucket is the handiest FEL attachment there is).
I have an L series with 3000 hours on it and the damn thing just won't die, and by no means am I a tractor absolutist - I own/ have owned them all, but I'll never darken John Deere's door ever again.

Making me really like the Kubota L3901

I stated with a 29hp NewHolland, then to a 55hp Kubota, Now a 100 hp Case. My next purchase will be a lane shark. Bought the case used for a old manor I would have bought equalivnt Kubota.

After listening to yall and considering what could reasonably afford/what would work well on my property, I’m thinking I’m going to target a 30-40hp Kubota with a FEL and 4wd

Cab is a difference maker.

A cab is great for field work but I hate it for general utility work. Great when you hit a bee nest but a royal pain in the arse the rest of the time. It really limits the usefulness of a "camp" tractor IMO.
Eta: I love the internet. OP wants a compact 25hp open station. Suggestions are for a 75hp+ cab and air 4X4 with a FEL.
OP wants a $15k tractor and yall want him to get a $55k tractor for goofing off at the deer camp.

1- don’t go low hp…youll wear it out
Tractorhouse.com has a great search criteria. Size, brand, geography…
An older model that hasn’t been abused is a great option…

Before pulling the trigger on a Kubota, price one similiar in the LS brand. They are tough, dependable tractors and priced less than Kubota. But you wont go wrong buying Kubota. I have an older L2800 HST.

Looking for some wisdom from the OB.
Considering anything from 25-40 hp.
How many hours would you consider too many?
Any brands to steer towards or away from?
Is HST really that much nicer than gear drive?
Any advice or recommendations are welcomed
This will be my first tractor. I’ve always wanted one and plan on hanging on to it for the long haul. Thanks
Hours depends on what was being done when it was running. I have a 2025 TYM 25 HP loader backhoe with nearly 70 hours on it since February. I have never adjusted the throttle above idle. The majority of those hours have been spent feeding logs to the sawmill with the grapple. I changed the engine, transmission and front axle oil a few weeks ago and the used oil looked exactly like the new oil. If that same tractor had been redlining for those 70 hours it could be close to worn out, especially if it ever heated up in those 70 hours. Hours are the only way to know how long its been used but it depends on what it was doing while being used as to how many would be too many. I had a Case 580 backhoe years ago that had nearly 4500 hours on it and they were HARD hours...and it ran like it was new. I have a buddy with a 2024 John Deere 3025 and he has about 25 hours on it and it has been in the shop about 6 of the 18 months he has owned it.
I was on the fence about the HST versus Gear tractor...went to the HST. I am very happy I did. I don't know if its as rugged and will last as long but it is a sho nuff pleasure to operate.
Brand is a controversial subject. If price is not that big a deal obviously a John Deere or Kubota is the answer. Just about all the other brands are pretty similar. I bought a 25 HP TYM in February. FEL, Backhoe, Grapple with third function and paid $20,900 all in taxes, tag and recappable tire. I went with it based on price and especially the load rating of the FEL...it is nearly double a similar Deere 3025 FEL and about half again as much as a Kubota. Both can be hacked to match the rating of the TYM but I ain't going to hack a $40,000 tractor when I can buy one that will do what I need it to do with factory settings for $21K. TYM is Branson. They do not have much of a dealer network and parts are scarce BUT almost everything on the thing can be replaced with off the shelf parts from NAPA or online, it just requires some research. They are simple machines (JD and Kubota ARE not simple machines) and I am comfortable doing any maintenance that needs to be done and confident anything beyond maintenance I can find a way to repair the thing. If this is not the case I would stay away from any of the bargain brands...if you pay someone to change the oil and brakes on your vehicles buying an off brand tractor is probably a bad idea.
If your goal is hang on to it for a long time buy a JD or Kubota. If you aren't comfortable doing your own maintenance and repairs for certain buy a JD or Kubota. If price is not overly concerning buy a JD or Kubota, as much of one as you can afford. If this is not the case the off-brand Korean and Chinese and India manufactured tractors are being used around the world and in the US hard and many people swear by them. I am very happy with mine thus far....if it will last another 230 or so hours with a major hiccup I will consider it a win and sale it for about 60% of what I paid for it and be ahead of the game by $30k or so compared to renting or paying a contractor to do what I am doing with it. I will probably keep it as long as it still operates to some extent but if I can get 300 hours out of it I am more than satisfied. Its all relative to what your needs and expectations are. Good luck.

If I can bump the budget to 20k seems like I can get a nicely used L3301 or L3901 Kubota

You could around me with a FEL but not a backhoe. Almost no one needs a backhoe....you can rent an excavator 20 times and do more work with it than you can a $6k backhoe attachment. I am going to need one extensively in the next 12 months but other than it being a counter-weight for the grapple it has gone almost unused....

The guy on our lease who bought one doesn't spare any expense on hunting purchases so I assume it is a top of the line model. He loves it and that thing is bad to the bone.
