Really? It's one of the best deer calibers. It could be considered the best magnum cartridge.

I have no idea how people make 300+ yard shots

You do realize that you can set your maximum point blank range by sighting in about 2-3 and inches high at 100yds. 300yds is not considered long range and you don't have to worry about wind.

If you shooting 1in groups at 100 yds you and sight in 3.5in high at 100yds you can aim dead on a deer up to 350 yds. The vitals are 10 inches so you have plenty room for error. It's still wise to shoot at distance to confirm your shots are placed correctly.

From my favorite stand, I can shoot three different directions. clockwise, 150, 300, 200, rounded off.
On the long shooting lane, I routinely put rice bran at a little over 200 yds as there is a 2’ mound out there.
Have killed several on that spot with 300 WSM and lately 6.5 Creedmoor.
In Union Parish, years ago, I shot a doe at around 250 but that was paced and don’t remember exactly. 308 Rem. Bushmaster That has never, ever hung up. Bring it on!!
LOL.
ETA: shot a trotting Coyote at a paced 215 yds. Had to go get the truck to load up an 8 pernt and he was in the neighborhood. 300 WSM.
Also shot a bobcat a looong way off, running away. 243 in South Texas.

That's a problem with a lot of hunters. They don't shoot regularly (or at all) at hunting distances until there is a deer in front of them. They don't know the ballistics of the round they're shooting. Even something as simple as how much drop a bullet has from 200-300 yards. It's on the back of the box. Just because you can hit a paper plate at 25 yards doesn't mean you're ready to hunt.

Youth guns fit me better. I'm only 5'7". My arms are pretty shot. My draw length on a compound bow is 26.5"

My longest kill was a small 6 point at 220 yards. 6.5 Swede. Only deer I killed with that rifle. I was 16. Deer was facing me I aimed for where the neck and chest met. Hit him in the head. Again, I was 16. Idiot.

I have not killed a lot of deer in all my years hunting, but I'm not very used to missing. This year I missed a doe at about 150 yards. I was dumbfounded.

i personally witnessed a guy from south la that was a marine sniper w gulf war kills... drop a doe at 600 yards with a .308 - was a verified before and after shot 600 yards... had a small food plot and bait station within view of the the camp at 600 yards. was very cool and impressive.... boom slight delay then doe lurched up.... took about 15 steps. several guys in club tried same shot over the years with rifles far more capable than his of making that shot..... never even drawing blood...

20 gauge slug gun w/ accutip shells. I only hunt with slug guns so I won’t ever have any fancy distance but I do get to SEE what I’m shooting and sometimes they see me. As long as I can drop white-tail with a 20 gauge I can’t see the point in changing tactics at my age. My next challenge will be bows if anything.

7mm08 less than 150 yards.

Better story:
Pops was hunting in Texas and got tired sitting in a box so went walk around. Ended up about 400-500 yards from his stand and shot a deer another 150yds or so away from the stand. He never told anyone that his shot was only 150. He let them believe it was a 650 yd shot with a 30.06

44 yards steps, swamp rabbit thru the eyes with my bow, estimated 45 yards, never took my eyes off the rabbit and watched the arrow arch to the target, amazing sight I’ll never forget...

.270 about 200 yards. I remember like it was yesterday. I was 17 on thanksgiving break and dad had just dropped me off the four wheeler. I climb the ladder stand. I get to the top and don’t even get good and sat down yet. I hear him. Heart starts pounding.. all I see is one side of the horns beside a tree broadside. I shoot and drop him. Dad comes over the phone and says what In the frick are you shooting at cause he is About 800 yards down from me. I tell him I got me a buck. He said I’ll be there in a min. He gets there and says I’ll be a motherfricker. 8 point. Young buck though with a basket rack. Haven’t seen one since.
