Why does it matter where it goes? Shut off the valve, empty the tank and repair the leak. ...
If still under labor warranty there should be no charge for that. Some warranty’s are weird when it comes to freon. That may be what they are charging you for. Also only the original installer of the equipment will warranty the labor. Is it still the original company?...
It may not be up to code but if you just cap it and sick it in the wall I don’t see what would go wrong. It would be a dead end not drawing any amps so would never burn up....
99% Thermocouple 1% gas valve. I’d start with the thermocouple it’s cheap and a easy diy job...

That will destroy your equipment in no time...
Pull the exhaust fan down and put a good in line back draft damper right above the fan....
The exhaust fan is leaking, seal all the holes on it and seal where it penetrates the sheet rock. Then disconnect the the exhaust fan from the duct that takes it out the house and install a spring loaded back draft damper instead of the crappy one that came with it. I’m about to diy pour a 30x16 slab for a outdoor kitchen / sitting area. I have some broken up concrete I need to get rid of would it hurt my new slab to put the old concrete in then pour over. It’s hard to explain but trust me you don’t want your attic cool in the summer time. It can cause your duct work to sweat. Instead of worrying about cooling your attic spend your money on insulating your ceiling....
It would be cool but they need to get the whitetail population / hunting right first and keep the whitetail a priority. Oh and get rids of pigs ...

You still return and supply from the living space. And you won’t need a bigger unit because you won’t have any heat gain from the ducts in the attic picking heat. Also you won’t be really conditioning your attic but it will feel like it, if done right....
