He's the most gentle and docile dog I've ever had but when he sleeps, he growls and barks... a lot. I can only imagine that he is having bad dreams. Has anyone encountered this? Is there anything I need to look at like changing his food? It's almost every single time he falls asleep.

My lab will be 9 this July, He has done this his whole life. Never barks, but growls, twitches, Wags his tail, and even whines sometimes.

My lab does that some. To me it seems like he is in a deep sleep.

If his dreams are like mine he’s probably swimming after a dead duck only to watch it fly off three feet in front of him.

Totally normal. My 9 y/o golden has done this her whole life. She’s hunted way less the last couple years and I feel like her dreaming is more intense. Maybe she’s smarter than I realize. The other night she was asleep on my couch and she yelped herself awake and down onto the floor. She then walked around in a circle confused for about 15 seconds and laid down and went right back to sleep .

I always figured my pups were dreaming about fighting a mailman or chasing a car that was made entirely of ham.

My dog sleeps near me during the day while I'm working, he has dreams all the time.

I'll hear him making noises and look to see him growling and fighting something in his sleep

I always figured he was chasing cats

My GSP was sleeping in my office, running in his sleep, farted, scared him awake, woke up barking and ran to the door.

I guess sleep fart means someone knocked?

my lab dreams all the time. If she isn't whining and twitching in her sleep then she is snoring like an obese human. Dogs are the best....

All of my dogs have done this. My current catahoula does it rarely but my GSP was a running and barking B in her sleep.

They all do it. Might be a good dream, dogs love barking at shite. I always figure mine is in some kind of squirrel city but she can never quite catch em.

My 10 year female yellow lab has also done this her entire life. Sometimes it’s quite funny - whimpering immediately followed by a deep growls, whipping her tail. Makes you wonder what they are dreaming about - is it a nightmare or fun dream of them chasing and playing with other dogs, or chasing a critter.
