Is a .308 too big of a round for a 10 yr old?

Debating letting my 10 yr old hunt with a .308. Just worried it might be too much.

Ehhh, shouldn't be too bad. If you want, just let him/her shoot reduced recoil rounds. I just bought a .308 for people at my camp to use who are recoil shy/less experienced.

The reduced recoil rounds are great. My kids have shot 3 deer with them all with great results. The other thing to consider is that kids Flinch more with the loud noise than with the recoil so make sure you've got some good ear protection

I would think so.

The OB consensus would be something in the range of:

.223
.243
7mm-08
.44

Personally, my kids all came up shooting their first deer with a Handi rifle .44 and then moved to 7mm-08.

The thing I liked about the .44 was that on paper I would have them shoot the Special ammo. Basically zero recoil. And then on deer I would slip in a Magnum round. Lot more punch to get the job done.

The 7mm-08 with the reduced recoil rounds are a really good option too.

I guess you could find the 308 in reduced recoil. I have never looked. I shoot a 308 at hogs. And I weigh #230 and I am very much aware of the recoil. It doesn't seem like it would be a fun round for a kid weighing #60 to me.

Just my 2c

I have seen 7 and 8 year olds shoot 7mm-08. It is honestly one of the best rounds for hunting for people at any age.

My 11 year old shot my Ruger American predator in .308 when he was 10. Didn’t bother him at all. He has shot a .20 for the past 3 years dove and duck hunting.

Now my suppressed 308 has become the ultimate kid hunting gun

Seems like the size of the 10 yr old would be essential to this question.

Depends on where you shoot the 10 year old.

Not if the gun fits him decently. How the gun fits is a far bigger factor in felt recoil than the caliber (up to a point of course).

Shooting off of a bench sucks as well. If the gun fits decently from hunting positions he could likely comfortably shoot a .30-06

We let my 10 year old nephew shoot a doe with my 7mag. Scoped him a lil bit

Kind of a shitty thing to do tbh. You can set him up to flinch forever because you did that.

He knew it would kick, and was told numerous times if he saw any black around the ring to back his head up. It’s not like we wanted him to get scoped.

Whatev, he’s like 16 now and has shot numerous deer/fine since then.

No joke buy the kid a 7mm-08. Light recoil and he’s basically shooting a 270

Just bought a 7mm08 for my son. Sighting it in made a believer out of me. Shooting reduced recoil loads and it kicks a lot less than the 243 auto I started out on. And the savage axis 2 is really light gun as well.

I was sighing in his 7mm08 and my weatherby 30-06. Mine weighed twice as much and kicked at least twice as hard. Now I want one.

My seven yr old shoots a browning abolt micro in .308. I get the hornady reduced recoil and he does fine. He weighs 65 pounds. I agree with needing good ear protection

Its fine. Let him get use to a scope with a 17 or 22.

Then shoot the 308 when hunting. They will never feel the recoil.
