Coyotes. TIP: Late December through March is mating season for coyotes. Please do not let your dogs out alone. The coyote gets your dog to chase and then somewhere in the distance the pack waits for your dog. Then the outcome is tragic as they can & will attack/kill your pets. Just be aware it can happen to your beloved pet. {Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that coyotes always pose a risk to your dog (and other small pets). That risk increases during mating season.}

Is the author suggesting that any male dog could chase after a female coyote in heat?
Intelligent if so.

It actually seems like the author is suggesting that coyote gangs are actively planning these dog hunting situations where they get a female to lure a dog to get jumped.

I didn’t think coyotes were that diabolical

I could spend the rest of my life entertaining myself by trolling the people who post on Nextdoor and be completely fulfilled.

I'd doubt it is that diabolical. Could simply be a male dog tracking a female in heat...that female just so happens to be a coyote, and the pack kills the interloper/competing predator.

Not sure about the heat part but i got down a rabbit hole on the YouTube where some ol boys use a dog to lure in multiple coyotes to shoot them. Not sure exactly what the yotes are coming to to dog for but you can see them on several occasions try to get the dog to chase after them.
Pretty cool to watch if you like working dogs.

One of my friends married a feller in Wyoming who hunts them like this. I didn't believe him until he showed me videos.

This happens often. Had friends dogs killed this way, witnessed it with my own eyes. One tried to get my "fenced in labs" this way. Came up 3foot from fenece doing some whelping howl.. and would back up, kept doing this over and over to get it to follow. Meanwhile the pack was in edge of woods.

Loved it when a packs of deer dogs (blue tick) got on a coyote. Hell of a “race” to listen to in the woods.

Predators persecute other predators. Wolves attack coyotes and whatnot. Lack of wolves across this country has helped for smaller predator numbers (e.g., coyotes, skunks, etc.) to explode (mesopredator release hypothesis).

(Maybe that has been disproven by now, but that was the thought back in my days of learning.)

My dog brings dead coyotes to my backyard every year. I suppose they try to lure him away, then they realized they done fricked up.

Brought 2 in one night. Didn’t realize coyotes were actively baiting dogs, just figure he caught them wandering away from the pack.

I had a female border collie that use to run out in the woods every day and night when she heard coyotes. Granted she was female so obviously different circumstances. She never got harmed at all. I had many coyotes in my area there out in the country. Saw her chase off 3-4 of them in the back one day. I’ve had someone who raised border collies tell me they have a “way” of avoiding being killed or trapped by them, maybe just intelligence, but they also have “the eye” or “hard eye” that supposed intimidate other animals. Probably all BS and they get killed by yotes all the time, interesting to me though. She ended up dying due to a seizure

Some examples, doesn’t seem intimidating but used to intimidate sheep normally to keep in line

Those bastages are the smartest things in the woods by far.
I hate them with a passion...respect them for their cunning, but hate them none the less.

I doubt they are luring the dog. I would bet its either the pups mother or father or leader or whatever, and the leader goes hunting while the others stay back and watch. Then the leader gets chased and they all jump in to protect it.

If a pack of coyotes was truly able to do this, there would be stories of 100s of dogs going missing in certain areas. Farm dogs would never survive. A pack would take out a dog a week or more. This never happens. Its more likely what was seen had some slight detail we didn't know about tweaked to make it look different then what actually happened.

it's the heat thing and dog's being curious - Coyotes are smart but not that calculating. now if the dog shows up... and generally the "family" packs are broken up by mating season. a male coyote is gonna defend his poon... plain and simple.. and when they have youngsters and a dog goes snooping around... both mom and pop will stop the threat of the of the dog.

moral here don't let your pets roam
