Can you switch it on the fly or do you have to be stopped?

On my Ram, I can switch into 4WD High while moving. I think I have to be slower than 45mph to switch.

In 4WD Low, I have to stop and put the transmission in neutral to switch on or off.

Things to Remember;

4wd is for slippery surfaces.

Full time all wheel drive has a differential in the transfer case to allow front and rear driveshafts to have different speeds on turns.

If you engage 4wd on dry concrete and no tire slippage, you can't make a full circle before driveline binds up and vehicle stops-if manual transmission you won't even be a able to get it out of gear. At that point pickup a wheel with a floorjack and you would be surprised how much the axle untwists.

I've found on Toyotas(mine included) with electric actuators for transfer and differentials, on wet roads while going straight I'll go to 4w High to let the electric actuators move. They need to be used to keep the motors from sticking.

Old school manual locking hubs had a manual transfer case- everybody loved those-now everything is shift on the fly.

Guess I’m in the minority here on sun roofs. I’ve had one on both my trucks and current suburban. I drove a Jeep Wrangler pre-kids and only sold it due to car seat room.

I guess windows down just does not cut it for me. My kids enjoy it as well when we drive through the conservation park and they can hang out the top and view the tour. “We are on a real jungle drive dad”. That’s a win and memories made.

As far as 4wd, it looks like you got some good answers already. Good luck on your hunt.

Yea the guy above you really dropped some knowledge. I got all the answers I need

Talked to my pops earlier. I begrudgingly admitted he was right, but told him I’d probably get one anyway, and he just mumbled some old school type shite at me

I’ve never found 4 low to be useful in mud. To me 4H is better because you can really spin the tires and rock it back and forth to get out. 4L is slower and doesn’t improve traction.

I always though 4L was more a lower gear that you use if you’re pulling something heavy up a hill like a boat ramp, or on slick dirt roads pulling a load so you don’t strip out your differential

Pain in the fricking arse. Last thing I want to do when in mud is get out of the truck and get all muddy trying to lock them in.

I miss my 77 K5 blazer that was all time 4wd, it had a shifter on floor to select 4hi, 4lo, 4hi lock, 4 lo lock.

Meaning it was either in normal slip differential 4wd or you could lock the differential and all 4 tires pulled equally. Now in lock you could not make a turn. But you could drive through anything. Used it for setting up the blind and decoys in flooded rice fields, it would cut ruts 1 1/2 ft deep with narrow mud king tires pushing water with the bumper. Never got stuck. Ever. Not even close

4lo is slower situations that require more torque. 4hi is for quicker speeds and "sending it."

4lo also is a mode you can lock in locking differentials if your vehicle has them. Most modern vehicles don't have that b/c it requires a solid axle and therefore not independent suspension, and therefore a much more rough ride.

axles > no axles for offroading.

My buddy melted his transfer case while at Cape Hatteras in 4lo on the sand. Sounded awful going up the flatbed tow-rocket.

I had a 1979 Chevy K10 SWB pickup with the same feature. I was always the one pulling everyone else out who got stuck. Damn thing was a beast. I hate I ever got rid of it.

Yep. I have a Chevy, but I can switch from auto or 4 high at any speed.

I have a 2012 F150, love my sun roof and haven't had problems. Didn't have problems with my 2007 f150 either. But i have heard of plenty people having issues. Maybe i just got lucky. I'll continue to buy until i run into serious problems.

You are correct. Super handy for backing up heavy trailers when it is wet.

Went to college. It was my play truck in high school I bought with summer work money. Also had a 72 Chevy 2wd as a project truck. Kept both through first 2 years of college when I played Juco football, but then sold both when I went to MSU for college money.

Wish I had kept them both.

Off road, I use 4 low exclusively. I've got 4.55 gearing, with locking spool on the rear and with the transmission in dog gear, I just idle through mud. If you go slow and never break traction, you can get through it. If you feel it spin, just back the hell out right then, before you get yourself in further and deeper. It's kind of the same for climbing on rocky stuff too, as slow as you can go, the better off you are. Gearing is definitely your friend, but you have to resist that urge to gun it and just feather the gas pedal.
