I have a rather simple question about 4x4 trucks

Been looking at trucks for awhile now, probably will purchase soon... but I was wondering, what are the different drive modes of 4x4 for? I see on the fords, they have 4x4 auto, high, and low... obviously that’s going to limit or control RPMs, but in what type of situations would you want to use each option??

Also, bonus question:

For some reason, I really want a sunroof on my next vehicle. I’ve never had one before, and I’m a windows down type of guy ... my old man says that they’re nothing but trouble, but I’m not sure. What kind of experiences have y’all had with them?

4 high for when you think you might get stuck. 4 low for when you think you might get really stuck. 4 auto for when you’re driving on ice and want to avoid a ditch.

4H is for when you are not getting stuck.
4L is for when you are stuck...preferably with someone standing next to your truck, holding a beer, shouting "PUT IT IN LOW!"

That’s kind of what I figured. Just never understood what 4High was for or when I would have to use it

Yes

Uh ... no.

4x4 auto functions more like a computerized 4-wheel limited slip differential or sort of like "part-time AWD" for lack of a better description.

4x4 low is essentially a crawl option and (unless you have something like Toyota's crawl control or equivalent), you control your speed of ascent/descent with judicious use of the throttle at very low speed - primarily to clear a very rugged patch or get unstuck.

4x4 high is a higher speed option of 4x4 low, but keep in mind, that's misleading - most of these on demand 4x4 options are designed for more or less straight or very low turn speed navigation over broken terrain, mud, heavy sand, etc. Using them on pavement or in higher speed turns is going to be highly unstable/dangerous.

Meh. It's a novelty that wears off quickly. The potential leak/water damage only increases with age. YMMV

All of the above.

4L is also useful on slick boat ramps.

I use 4A when driving in heavier rain. It may not do anything, but it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Avoid a sunroof. Especially the big one on F150’s. Mine has been trouble. Constant knocking, never seems to fully seal, now won’t open... I didn’t want one but it came with the package on the truck.

I NEVER use a sunroof in other cars and trucks.

Windows down, yes.

But it’s one more thing to go wrong. It adds cost. But I am CHEAP.

I put a kindle fire in the middle for the kids to watch instead of putting $2000 9 inch displays in the headrests. Reason? Another thing to go wrong and the dealership has to fix it.

I can just charge the fire and take it with me in the other car.

I usually go base trim plus one on all models; which usually takes me out of all sunroof models anyway.

Really, all I need are:

Hitch
Satellite radio
Backup camera

Yea no to sunroom. My 2013 f150 sunroof leaked after a few years. Over 2 grand for dealer to replace.

4 high I use when running hunting lease trails that are wet but not bogging down

4 Low when crawling through deep mud

4 auto when I'm driving in snow and ice on roads

Thanks fellas. Gonna have to tell the old man he was right I guess

If it comes with the package that’s fine, but I won’t go out of my way to get one. Been looking at lariats and it seems about 50/50 on whether they have them or not

I'm a windows down guy and I like having a sunroof. I have a 14 Tundra and have never had a problem with it. I also like having a full size power rear window.

To each their own I guess.

I'll second this. Was great on my king ranch until it started sticking and not opening and then not closing.

4x4 auto is also good when pulling out into traffic on wet roads. That's the only time I use it to keep from spinning the back tires and getting hit.

4 High is for when you leave the road.
4 Low is for when you aren't sure if you are gonna be able to get back to the road.

Wise man once told me "Sonny, 4wd doesn't keep you from getting stuck. It just lets you get stuck in more inaccessible locations."
