Hypothetical question about tagging deer

If you’re out of state bowhunting and have one buck tag. You shoot a nice deer in the evening, let’s say 130-140”. You let him sit overnight and you find the deer the next morning but you find that coyotes have found the deer sometime last night and have eaten most of the deer.
Do you tag it?

No. If you shoot something get a dog to find it if you can't. I wouldn't tag just a set of horns. I can't eat them.

Yep, regardless of the size or sex, if you kill it you tag it.

I would. Especially out of state

Yes the ethical, moral, and LAWFUL, obligation is to tag the animal. Utah(maybe Nevada can't remember) if you know you have wounded the animal severely and did not recover in a timely manor you are to forfeit your tag in the draw system.

Not only from an ethics stand point, but majority of folks go out of state for trophy hunting, Even on public land. So you would have still gotten what you came for, a trophy deer and a great trip.
Go back home and whack a doe for the freezer if need be.

Happened to me in Oklahoma last season. I put a bad shot on a buck. Found him the next day it he was a skeleton. I tagged him

It's one of those decisions that suck at the time, but down the road you'll feel good about yourself for doing it. Like trying to find the owner of a lost wallet full of cash. The easy route isn't always the most satisfying.

I like hunting too much to risk not tagging it and getting popped for it.

Always my answer in questionable situations.

Explain how you get popped for an animal that you didn't pick up and tag. No guide, just you. Who would ever know?

you do the right thing, even if no one is looking.

The right thing would be to recover the animal before the coyotes get it. No point in tagging a skeleton. You going to drag a corpse and stick it in your ice chest?

You took a deer out of the herd, that should count against your tags.
