How to keep beagle from digging up yard

My beagle, nine years old, has gone nuts with digging up my yard. He has always dug a little, but lately he has become obsessed with digging.
He's a great dog, listens to me about everything except digging. I fuss at him, spank his butt, and he knows he has done wrong, but he will go back to digging the next time I let him out. He is digging for insects he smells in the dirt, digs them up and eats them.
He is for the most part an inside dog, he's inside 75% of the time and sleeps inside. I let him outside several times during the day for an hour or two while I'm working. (I 90% work from home).
I know a shock collar can be used, but I would have to sit by a window and wait for him to dig and then shock him, but with work during the day, I need to be at my desk to access the computer and files.
Any ideas on solutions would be appreciated.

Tried both. He doesn't care, he just goes to a different part of the yard and digs new holes. My yard looks like the surface of the moon.

have you considered getting him declawed?
if he is declawed, he wont be able to dig but maybe tear up a little grass.
house dogs dont need their claws so if he isnt your hunting dog, just declaw him, before he turns those claws on the sofa or the carpet in the house

IDK if there's anyway to stop him. Maybe shocking would work.
I'll just tell you this...we got a beagle pup from my stepdad a few years ago who has been raising hounds for probably 50 years... and he said "You better hope you didn't get a digger".
I wasn't sure exactly what he meant. But now maybe I do.

Doesn’t matter how well you feed him he’s gonna want to dig up bugs to eat
Had one that would bury treats, stand over hole guarding it for 15 minutes then dig it back up to eat it
Maybe don’t let him out for such long periods of time

Get mole repellent
This is the main answer here. I bet without knowing that around September you get holes as well. Early spring and beginning of fall you will have mole trenches.
Also, put down some grub killer as well on your lawn.

Get rid of it.
Beagles are hell on yards.

We keep ours on a 25ft dog chain from Walmart when he's outside. He doesn't dig but eats anything gross he comes across if we let him enjoy the whole yard and especially if he ends up by the lake

Awwww, but they can be soooo cute:
Maybe you should just get him a few friends:

I had a dachshund that dug holes all over the yard and there was no way to stop her. Some dogs just love to dig. I also had a lab that liked to scratch walls and doorframes. That dog had to leave for a new home with my nephew in the country.

Concrete entire yard
Put boxing gloves on dog
Ask him to stop digging in a polite manner
or you may want to encourage him to keep digging because he might turn up some texas tea oil or gold.....or a dead body.

A beagle? Surrendur. The french knew a thing or two when applied correctly.
My neighbor has a beagle that shreds his front lawn and sleeps on his dining table. Last week I caught my retriever on the back of the couch and sent a pic to my neighbor demanding reparations for teaching my dog this trick.

Create an area where the dog is allowed to dig like a sand box. Haven’t dealt with beagles specifically but I have had success using this with other dogs. The dog may need some help figuring it out but that’s just normal training, rewarding the behavior you want and correcting the behavior you don’t.

lots of uneducated idiots who never owned beagles were quickly downvoting my post, but its the only solution to stop it short of just getting rid of the dog
