I’ve got Gravely commercial 56” that is on year 11. It’s beat to hell and back but keeps on trucking. Hope to get 2-3 more years out of it.

I had a nice walk behind one from Sears that lasted about 8 years. Mother in law bought it for us when we bought the house back in 2007. It died on me halfway through the front yard a few summers ago. Thought it was just low on gas, but I filled it up and couldn't get it to start. Ended up buying a cheap push mower from Lowe's that is still going strong. I sort of miss the walk behind on the slope of my backyard, but I get to cut grass and get a little workout at the same time.

We were washing the cars a couple of summers ago, then I was going to cut the grass. My wife had never used a lawnmower and wanted to try it out since she was out there with me. I was going to let her cut so I could weedeat and edge at the same time. She struggled to push it in the front yard, made about 5 passes and it was crooked too. Thankfully she drives better than she cuts grass. Then she realized why I'm always tired after doing the yard. I had to recut the section she did as well to get the lines straight. It was partly my fault for not letting her start at the curb to get the first line straight.

I bought a Ferris IS700Z 52" in 2015.
So this will be my 4th season with it.
I change the blades and oil every year.
I keep the spindles greased every 4-5 cuts.
I only run Ethanol free gas in it.

I had 1 belt break in the 2nd year and it was replaced for free by my dealer because he said there was a recall on 1 batch of belts from my model year.

Still cuts great and it makes cutting my 2.59 acres a breeze compared to my old Husqvarna lawn tractor.

10 mph > 3 mph

Current one is just over a year since the previous one proved it cannot survive as a submarine. That one happened to be only 2 years old when it flooded. The one previous to that was a reconditioned Murray that was 13 when it kicked the bucket. In all those years, I doubt I had more than 20 pulls total that didn't crank it up.

1 year. Cub Cadet XT1 54" fabbed deck.

Still have 16 year old Murray Lawn tractor. Runs but deck fell apart. Kids use it to pull small trailer around and pick up limbs, hedge trimmings, etc.

I'm in the process of moving full time to back to Oklahoma and retiring. There I mow over 3 acres not counting the brush hogging. Most of what I mow is field grass but my wife likes it mowed vs brush hogged. Looking at buying a new Grasshopper. The damn thing is expensive as hell but the owner of the shop and store is retired military like I am.

Anyone have any experience with Grasshoppers?

I use a 1972 IH 140 tractor with a 72" SSt homemade rear finish mower with woods spindles, gears, etc.

I rolled it into the river behind my house once and the local tractor dealer showed up the next morning with boom trac and lifted it out. They hauled it to the shop and had it running in like 3 days. That was 3 yrs ago and I'm still mowing with it today.

Changed the oil a bunch of times, gasoline, new clutch plates, and the ignition switch and starter had to be changed. When we set it on the river bank, we pulled the oil dip stick and water stream out about 18" in the air.

That old iron is pretty heavy duty.

Bought a Honda self propelled last year. When I cranked it for the first time this spring I hadn't even finished pulling the cord and the thing was on. Not even a sputter. It's amazing how reliable machines are nowadays.

I have Toro Personal Pace thats about 10-12 years old. Changed the oil twice or so and the blade once. It has the B&S GTS (Garunteed To Start) engine and I can count one 2 hands how many times its didnt start on the 1st pull.

Had a 1996 Exmark Lazer Z HP 48" until two weeks ago. The thing was a beast and you could not kill it, with proper maintenance (Kohler Command 18 hp)! Deck finally got to rusty. Rusty will be on Craigslist shortly.

Traded up to a 2015 Kubota ZD221 54" with the liquid cooled Kubota 3 cylinder diesel. Will probably have it 20 something years too.

If not for the holes in the deck and it being well beyond just welding in patches, and the cost of a decent used deck being north of $800.00 I would still have the Exmark.

Honda self-propelled is starting season two soon, hope it's the last one I buy for at least 10 more seasons. I change the oil in all of my small engines every season, full sythetic 10W30, new air filters, scrub the sparkplugs and check the gaps, and sharpen blades.

04 Scag. Sat under water for four days during the flood. Changed oil until all water was out ( 7 oil changes), new plugs , drained fuel system and put fresh gas back in and it still cuts good. Idles a little funny and needs a choking to start but still cuts.

I’m on my third one in ten years. I got to break down and buy a riding lawnmower, a push mower just ain’t meant to run 3 or more hours at a time, and as I’m getting older I’m learning I ain’t meant to cut grass for 3 or more hours at a time.
