50 could work, but 80-100 would be more enjoyable.

50 acres and a UTV track means the game will seek quieter surroundings. Wildlife generally doesn't tolerate that noise unless it is constant such as from an adjacent highway.

if wooded and laid out in more or less a square/rectangle, then 50 will probably work. Obviously, don't ride a lot during hunting season.

40-50 is plenty enough for 1-2 hunters.

I have friends that own a camp in SW Mississippi with 40 acres. Neighbors on both sides of them don’t hunt and they have 3 food plots. Killed many nice 7s and 8s on that property. What you’re looking for is possible

This is exactly the reason why SW Mississippi hunting has fallin off so bad in the last decade or 2. Everyone thinks they can own 40 acres or so and kill plenty of deer. Guess what, you’re killing mostly your “good neighbors“ deer.

I own 40 acres and can hunt 3 stands pretty easy. My place is all woods and we don’t have much hunting pressure around us. I noticed your comment about work days. Be prepared to work your arse off to have a nice place. I have trails throughout my place that we keep cut and limb back 2 times a year. It’s rewarding work when it’s your place. You will need at least a 30 HP tractor to help keep it up.

That is interesting, I thought the wild hogs were the bigger problem

40 is enough to kill a deer or two per year; but it takes either the ideal 40 or a lot of work.

I have 40 in MS surrounded by national forest. I killed 6 deer in the 6 years I hunted there. 2 years skunked, 2 years I killed 2, 2 years I killed 1.

I've been in a club with 100 acres /member and killed more; but killing on your own land is more satisfying. Next year I'll be back on my land because the lease with the Mexican plumber expired.
Buy the land and put a camp on it.

Certainly part of the problem as well. Habitat degradation is huge strike. You can add feeders to that list too.

Those same people mostly hunt the 1,000 acre lease right across the street from their property and only hunt their private property if they see a bigger buck on the cameras these days. They don’t shoot everything that moves. It’s why they have had so much success. OP even said they’re not big time hunters, so if they manage it pretty well and are patient, it shouldn’t be too bad

60-80 would be ideal.
Honestly after about 100 acres it gets to be a lot of work for one person to handle

Ol boy speaks wisely.

Just like buying a house, it’s all about the neighborhood.

Very true words. I would much rather be at our camp with a paint brush or clearing brush than sitting on the couch in the city.

So you have listed 4 reasons as "exactly the reason", I think it is safe to say that deer numbers and quality are largely cyclical and can attribute it to multiple reasons and everyone likes to blame what someone else is doing, truth is , outside of a controlled habitat, shite happens

Can’t really argue that, and agree with you. But the 40 acre guys help fences go up. It’s been my experience many small properties abuse more than what they actually produce. Multiple properties around our area have created a drain on the resource.

For people saying 40-50 acres are enough for 2-3 hunters, are you just planning on putting stands on the property lines and shooting onto your neighbor's property? How many deer are you expecting to kill off of 40 acres?

If 3 hunters walk to 3 different stands on a 40, you are essentially driving all the deer off your property yourself before every hunt.

Have never hunted anywhere with adequate acreage. 150-200 acres per person is what most people use as a guide. Obviously the layout of the property makes a big difference but 2 people hunting the same 40 acres would be awful.

I own 130 acres. It’s a 1/4 mile wide by 4300 deep and have only killed one deer in three years. Have close to twenty animals on camera but they only come into the open at night. Noisy neighbors on one side doesn’t help. Location will matter more than acreage.

Sure, but that doesn't answer the question on how someone is expecting to have 3+ stands on 40 acres of land without putting stands on the corners and shooting onto someone else's property.
