Thinking about buying some acreage for me and my son, or Dad, to hunt and ride UTV on. Is 40-50 acres too small? We're not serious hunters, so not looking to get on lease with others who have tons of rules or work days.

That's plenty of ground for two folks to hunt on. If it's setup right you can hunt three on 50 acres easily.

If it’s the right piece with the right neighbors it can be a paradise.
The wrong spot and the wrong neighbors and 500 acers is not enough!!

You do realize that owning property will require work days?

I’d buy as much property as I could afford with a place to sleep on the property. I’ve had leases when you stay at hotels and it’s not the same. We have a camp house at our ranch in Texas and it wouldn’t be the same without it. We also have a 40x60 shop to store all our shite.

50 was my first thought when I saw the subject line. That's IF it's 50 Acres that are actually huntable and semi dense

A 50 acre ag field and y'all will be blowing kisses to each other. I'll pass on that.

Just drop 2-3k for some prime AL black belt hunting club. You won't have the hassle of up keep.

If you don’t have at least 100 acres per hunter it is too small.

If it’s adjacent to national forest or good neighbors, 50 acres is plenty. You need a camp of some sort where ya’ll can cook and sleep. Otherwise, you’ll never get much out of the place.

I have friends that own a camp in SW Mississippi with 40 acres. Neighbors on both sides of them don’t hunt and they have 3 food plots. Killed many nice 7s and 8s on that property. What you’re looking for is possible.

It sure is possible. I bought 40 acres surrounded by big woods. I've come to the conclusion that I can hunt 3 on the property safely. 40 acres is basically 1/4 mile square. That's 1300 (400 yds) feet to each corner.

I got 50 acres and it's got enough deer for two people but locations to hunt is the issue. Basically got 3 spots to hunt if you put more spots you are cutting the deer off. It's nice owning the land you hunt for sure. It need to be close to your house or have a place to stay.

40-50 acres should be plenty for 2 people. Like others have said, a lot depends on the lay of the land and the neighbors. We have 80 acres and have a primitive campsite on 1 corner of the property so we don’t disturb the deer driving in and out of the property. It’s hilly with a creek bottom and a pipeline through it. We have 5 stand locations setup mostly near the perimeter and 1 on the pipeline.

Most of the time it’s only me and my son hunting, so it can definitely be done.

ETA: we also don’t drive into the property unless we need to pick up a deer, fill feeders, etc. during deer season.

To me, 40 acres is enough for only one person, maybe 2. If it’s square, it’s about 400 yds across. I’d assume my scent can travel most of that. As such, on my 40s, I only hunt on the downwind side. If the place sets up to where there are 2 decent stands on every side, to accommodate 2 hunters, then that’s pretty good but tough to pull off.

On my 2 40 acre parcels, with a north wind, or east wind, I have decent spots for 2 people. South or west, only 1 good spot. I have some plans to try and improve that.
