re: How did you get into your deer lease?

I was born into the lease I’m in. Many of the members are extended family and everyone mostly gets along well. The hunting is not good, but it’s what I grew up with so it’s what I’m used to. This year is even more frustrating as I’ve only seen 9 deer since the season started. When I was in my 20’s I branched out a little to north Louisiana and Mississippi looking to kill more deer but I kept coming back home to the shithole.

Somehow or other, my Grandpa got us into our camp in 1984. Over the years, folks died or stopped hunting or whatever, and the camp shrank in terms of members to my family and family friends.
In recent years, many of those folks have died or stopped hunting.
So, now, three of us are keeping the camp going, and it's getting expensive.

i bought 60 acres, was able to bid on a 2 tracts that were school board land.
Also made friends with my guy across the street, he introduced me to other guys that I became friends with.
Long story short treated people well, they treated me well. when they gave up a 25 yr 800 acre lease they offered it to me. they were tired of the head aches and i was willing to put the money up.
not something easy to find.
now my kids have the opportunity to hunt on 1500 acres that i am control of. I have a few close friends that help with the cost. But not a hunting club by any means
i love it

One lease I’m on I grew up hunting. The way we do it is you pay what the total is for the acreage where you hunt. The area I’m in comes in at just under 500 acres so that’s what I pay for. My brother in law and uncle each pay a third.
I also hunt 40 acres where I live that joins my 13 acres that I own that don’t cost me anything but keeping an eye on the land. Last week I picked up 200 more acres that joins the 40. I contacted the landowner directly and inquired about leasing and they agreed to lease it.
I’ve had good luck using OnX and BaseMap to find property and the landowner information and directly contacting. You’d be surprised how much land you assume is leased but isn’t.

We got lucky. Had a good friend of mine’s uncle who knew a guy who came inherited 2K acres down near Rocksprings, TX.
When he inherited it he kicked off all the old members, no clue why, guess he didn’t want to do business with people he knew?
Regardless, my friend and several others got on it last year and I got on this year. Very, very lucky.

I originally hunted along the Ms river just south of Vidalia. We had 1000 acres and mostly 4 ppl hunting hard. It flooded almost annually but there was nothing like hunting that place. The deer were always so visible. I was offered to get in a lease this past year in woodville but it was just so different than anything I have ever hunted. I turned it down. MS river bottom hunting can you a bit spoiled.

Started asking a few friends and pretty quickly found a place that kicked out a guy to make room for me on other's recommendations.

I bought a 40 acre track of timber with hardwoods in Amite CO from a family friend. They have 40 acres that join my property that they let me hunt for free. SO I have 80 acres. Loggers are showing up to thin the pine and take 10 red woods that fell during Ida. Going to put the money from that back into the property. I like owning my own patch. I do what I want and don't have anyone else telling me what to do. I get along well with the landowner next to me.

Where is your camp located? Looking to get some of those expenses off your hands.
