I am at the stage where I am looking for a deer lease. Obviously, it's next to impossible to find anything good that isn't a giant club with a ton of members. Did most of you guys just grow up in your clubs/leases? Did any of you ever have success finding a 1000ish acre tract to start a lease with friends? I'm curious how most of it goes for you guys.

Was in a lease of about 4,000 acres. Got out when they started changing harvest rules and my kids had no interest in hunting.

Kids are now interested in hunting, and all the leases in the area had waiting lists.

I started checking all the corporate timberland companies for available leases, and they were all trash tracts. Eventually found a tract that is listed for sale with a local real estate company that didn't have a lease. Not the best option, as it could be sold out from under the lease, but at least I have a place to take my kids.

Network with friends who are hunters, reach out to brokers who specialize in recreational tracts, look into corporate timberland companies and talk to landowners in your area.

And ask here on the OB board - I had someone respond when they found out I was trying to find a place for my kids to hunt...lot of good folks on this board.

Good luck.

Those are many of the avenues I am currently trying. We have been checking with a lot of ppl with places for sale. Seems like you have to get past the realtor to the land owners. Nonetheless, I will keep at it.

The best ones, and the ones I stayed in the longest, were two clubs that friends invited me to join. Those clubs had wait list, but you could move up with a member recommendation.

The only real ways to get into a good camp is to know someone or be rich. Any camp worth being in will have a waiting list with little to no turnover in members.

For those leases that have assigned spots, you may never get the good spots. When a member knows he is not going to re'up, he will tell his member friends before announcing. That friend will go claim the good spot.

Friend at work.

It's small but there is only 8 of us. Cheap too.

Not the best but decent for me and the kids. Lease is run by a real good person. When his father passed last year he offered me the spot cause of its proximity to the main road and my small kids. We can walk in and out easy and never take down the four wheeler unless we kill something.

Really fortunate.

I’m in an avg lease 1:15 mins from the house. It’s not cheap but it’s close and kid friendly. The kids think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. They see deer nearly every hunt plus hogs and turkey.

Someone on here said once if you want a lease you have to pick 2 out of the 3 following things: close, cheap, good. You’ll never find all 3 in a lease. If it’s close and good, won’t be cheap. Etc.

My current lease and previous two leases I was asked to join by friends. Finding a good place to hunt without the recommendation of friends is very hard to do. The lease I am in now is a really nice of a piece of land I REALLY enjoy it out there. It's a small club member wise so hardly any drama. I made the decision to spend WAY more than I thought I would ever spend on a lease. I'm far from rich but it's been the best money I have ever spent. My kids and my wife love it out there we spend most weekends up there my kids there becoming boys and men and my wife relaxing. It was a big step to fork over the money three years ago but now I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I never minded large clubs. I was usually a better and more dedicated hunter than 75% of the members. They were subsidizing more land for me to hunt. Working shift work and hunting during the week also helped.

The very first one I was in, was after Katrina. Find called and asked if I wanted to get in with him on 350 acres. I said yeah and have been addicted ever since.

I joined a lease 2 years ago that a close friend has in woodville. It’s 2800 acres and the majority of the members only hunt thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. I went the other day and there were 4 people hunting including me. The kids enjoy it and it gives them way more chances at getting a deer than hunting behind the house every day.

Been hunting in Tensas right on the Mississippi River in a 10 member club my Uncle joined back in the 80’s for awhile but the past 2-3 years with the way the river has been flooding the deer have just become nonexistent so I too am looking for a closer club or lease since Tensas is a good drive. Seems like the same clubs every year post looking for members and they post the same pictures of the same deer every year. Ive been looking for about 2 years now for a decent club but I get suspicious seeing the same damn clubs looking for members and not having any new pictures.

Got a little lucky. My former neighbor leased land from a lady for cows and hay. He eventually leased a separate 200 acres tract for hunting that the same lady ownes. That started 10 or 12 years ago. I've been hunting the spot 7 years. My former neighbor gave it up 3 years ago so I took over the lease. Just me and a buddy hunt it now. Not any huge deer, but there are plenty deer around. Best part it is cheap and 40 min from my house NW of Houston.

Also on another lease that is more or less an expensive catfish lease. That is about all it is good for since there are no ducks around. Hoping for a deer spot to open as I am next in line. That first buck will be expensive.

A buddy found a track of almost 500 acres that was coming up for bid. We made a bid, other guys decided not to match it.

We have 6 members, but only 3 of us really hunt it frequently. 1 guy just hog hunts. We’ve done really well on it.

No camp though. Luckily I have a camp in Magnolia so it’s a short drive. We have an area to camp. If we had running water it would be great!

this for me as well. Started asking a few friends and pretty quickly found a place that kicked out a guy to make room for me on other's recommendations.

This is actually a good question. I've often wondered the same thing.

The one I'm in was formed by my step-dad and some friends in the late 80's. So I was a kid hunting with him and just joined when I grew up. It's kind of a pain in the arse because we lease around 2000 acres from probably 10 or 12 different landowners and it's not all 1 block of land.

I imagine it's hard to find a good group of guys that all mesh together. Most new members are acquaintances of existing members.

I am/was in a 1100 acre (Weyerhaeuser) lease in southern AR that is a mix of guys with ties to southern AR and New Orleans folks. Every member was a good friend or relative of a club member and most had visited as a guest prior to being invited to join. Good clubs are often that way.

I'm resigning from the club after this season because I got 240 acres in SE Mississippi where I want to focus my time and energy. I hope it's not a mistake because it is a good club with good folks and I easily got a couple deer every year. Mississippi will be more of a challenge.
