Home defense AR pistol optic

What’s a good optic for a home defense AR pistol. Looking at potentially putting a build together.
Thought I may splurge and get something a little better than some magpul flip up sites. I see a lot of people have a set of flip ups and then an optic in addition. Do people ever use these together or is it a backup in case the red dot or reflex site malfunctions?
Basically I’m here to hang up and listen to whatever anyone has to say on flip up sites or optics or both for home defense purposes on an AR pistol

I have an astigmatism so read dots aren’t the best for me. I have a couple of LVPO scopes with illuminated reticles that I really like a lot.
It really depends on how much you want to spend.

At the distances you’ll be shooting in a HD situation, flip up sights are more than sufficient. Assuming you learned to shoot on iron sight, target acquisition will be quicker in a Hd situation with iron sights than it would with a red dot.
Too many things can go wrong with a red dot IMO, especially battery issues.

I've got a Sig Romeo 5. Battery lasts for 40,000+ hours, has "shake awake" feature, and is in the $120-150 range.
As for backup sights, if this is for home defense, I wouldn't worry about BUIS. If your optic does go down, you're probably still talking about engagement distances still short enough to shoot instinctively.

I have a few set ups, but for home defense I would recommend the Leopold delta point pro, it turns on with movement of the weapon, nothing wrong with Magpul back up flip ups,,,,I have these set up with some Eotechs

Yeah, with a battery life of 6 minutes, not a bad idea to pair with an EoTech.
Ask me how I know

It may just be mine, but it eats up batteries.

For true home defense, you aren’t going to use sights most likely if we are being honest. It’s close enough and high stress enough it’s going to be natural point and shoot. It’s not the movies.
Sights are more for being on the offensive and military/ police/ hunting type of situations.
Given that, I’d buy whatever you like and feel most comfortable with. I’m just saying I don’t think there’s one that’s honestly best for CQC type home defense.

I'm looking to put a Pistol together soon. What brace are y'all using?

What’s wrong with good old iron sights?

If you want electronic I say Aimpoint H1, I’ve had one for 4 years and haven’t changed the batteries yet. Can’t go wrong with backup flip ups too though.

I run a vortex venom and like it. Compact and accurate. I have it absolute co-witness with the iron sites so good either way

Worry less about optics and more about a good light attachment. Like said above, you probably won't be "aiming" in that situation, but there's a high probability it'll be dark.

Holosun 510c. Have mine on my bergara .22 carbon fiber gun. No blooming. Very durable. Not very expensive.

Home defense ar pistol optic sounds and is pretty lame!! That’s video and fantasy game talk.

I run EOTech XPS2-2 (because it is an absolute co-witness with standard BUIS) with a front BUIS that I keep flipped up. My primary aiming tool will be the reticle. If for any reason I have a problem getting the sight functioning before I need to make a shot, I can center the front sight in the window of the HWS and put shots on target at the ranges we're talking. The rear sight only gets flipped up for longer ranges and I can drop both BUIS down once the optic is up and running.
The biggest disadvantage for the EOTechs is that they don't wake on movement. I get it, the EOTech you can buy is identical to what they provide the military. Since they're designed for combat use, wake on movement would just drain the batteries with the constant movement of soldiers on the go. I just wish that EOTech would produce a civilian geared model that was fitted with an active/off switch with active mode being wake on motion with a shutoff timer.

A bit off of what you are asking but what about a laser/light combo. Something like the Olight Baldr? That will give you light for illumination as well as an aiming device. As some have noted, most home defense distances are short so you don’t need a long range or magnified optic.
My Sig 228 has a grip activated laser, my AR has Holosun ACSS reticle with shake awake and I have a 3x flip up magnifier for longer shots; both have iron sights. I really like the laser because you can shoot from many positions of cover / concealment without having to put your head down on the rifle or behind the sights of a handgun.
FYI, be warned, you might try a few things before settling on what YOU like, so get ready to spend some money.
Good luck!
