Most stories here about the game wardens dont piss me off. His fricking job depends on guys like you paying for licenses, taxes on outdoor products, fees to use WMA. He should be happy to help you and insure your compliance with law. Instead he was a asswipe. The scenario with him disrupting your shite is nuts, and if you are going to be charging me 25 bucks to dispose of a bird, I would like to see proof of disposal of some sort.

Pretty much all of my GJ experiences have been fine. Ask for license and info then talk about the hunting or fishing for a few minutes and move on.
The only time they have really dug at me was a few years back. I had to meet my brother and stepdad wo were fishing at a local pond in town. I ran down to them and while I was down there I helped my little brother bait his hook and then casted it out in the water for him. Not there 5 minutes and at my vehicle is GJ asking for my license. I say I don't have one, but wasn't fishing. He goes on to say that he had eyes on my confirming I was fishing ( I saw the guy in the ghillie suit across the pond). Kept asking if I knew the definition of fishing, techniques, etc. Finally I tell him look, I baited a hook and casted it for my brother. He pauses and while looking at my license says "you're going to be 18 years old next week. That means you could go to jail as an adult." I just stood there. After a few minutes he told me to have a good day and left.

quote:Used it a couple times. I like it better than some regular ol wet paper zip tied to the animal, barely hanging on.
I killed a buck on Kistachie the day after TG this year and did the "Text to Tag" thing for the first time
I was so nervous driving up to the check-in station with the warden thinking he was going to give me a hard time since there was not tag on the buck, but luckily he was cool and everything went smoothly

Hate to hear of the power trip encounters. I've had multiple encounters and they've been nothing but professional. Have had more, but these are just the ones I remember. Hunted MS family land/lease from about 6 years old until college and never got checked by a GW there.
TLDR: All good encounters.
2005 - Hammering trout in Venice after Katrina. Got checked fishing at Cubit's Gap by GW and CG. 2 different CG boats pulled up 2 hours from each other. Showed the 2nd one the all clear paper that the 1st one gave us. GW checked our fish and that was it since we showed him CG paper also.
2015 - 4 adults/6 kids in 2 boats sitting at a cut in Venice catching trout. Had 150 trout between the 2 boats at the time. GW agents pull up and none of the kids under 12 have a life jacket on. Asks us if we are catching fish and tell him we have about 150. Says they are looking for duck hunters. Never checks us or mentions the life jackets.
2020 - Son and I are hunting youth day in Bayou Sauvage NWR. He shoots his limit in about 30 minutes. I see a boat just kind of hanging out a few hundred yards away. Pick up all our stuff and they stop us heading out. 2 younger GW who already had 2 local kids waiting on the side since they didn't have someone over 21 hunting with them. Asks to see all our stuff including signed Bayou Sauvage pamphlet. Tries to trip us up by asking who shot the ducks. Starts going thru the ducks and they can't be sure of the 3 redheads (limit 1) we had that we thought were scaup in low light (yes, we should have been sure when shooting). They spend 20 minutes off to the side trying to be sure of the species. Comes back and says they are going to do some duck ID training instead of writing us a ticket. Shows us the differences from the FWS duck ID book. Writes me a ticket for no life jackets and sends us on our way (left them in truck in the haste of getting to our spot in the morning). What could have been $1,000 fine and trip to court turned into $125.
2020 - Cat Island NWR shooting woodies. Getting back to the truck and GW riding by sees us and waits. Asks for license/refuge permit, made sure we had plugs and looks at our ducks (couple woodies and couple mergansers). Sends us on our way.
2 weeks ago - Bow hunting private land in EBR. Come out to truck about 10 am and GW waiting. Let him know I have 9mm open carry, he thanks me for telling him and asks me not to reach to that side. Put my lock on in back of truck and tell him I have to reach to gun side to get phone. Checks license and asks me a few questions about the property. About to leave and older gentlemen pulls up to talk to GW for about 20 minutes about some poachers on a nearby piece. They had me blocked in and I couldn't get out.
1 week ago - Cat Island NWR doing some woody scouting and bow hunting. Get back to the truck and the same GW from a week earlier is in the parking lot. Recognizes me and my truck. Apologizes for the guy blocking me in the week before and says he doesn't need to look at anything since he just checked me week before.

i just can't stand how they scrutinize every single thing (fish, flare expiration, etc), looking for any violation they can find (all without cause, mind you), but do the buddy buddy thing. frick off and go eat a donut.

Just like cops... there's good ones and bad ones.... 99% of the GW's I've come in contact with have been cool. I had a deal with one trying to cover for a buddy that tried to make me liable for a boat accident but it went to court and I won. Other than that I can't recall a bad encounter with one.

Our "tagging" in Missouri is all done through an app and it is great. Your permits are on the app, your tags, etc. Super easy and I've never had any problems. Don't see many GJ out where we live although they are in Cranes from time to time.

To my knowledge, a game warden could enter my home and check the freezer without a warrant.
Which is why some other branches of law enforcement will use GWs to go in somewhere if they think something is there but they can’t get a warrant or feel they don’t have time to get s warrant. GW goes in, doesn’t find any game, but sees evidence of other illegal activity and calls in the police, who then have probable cause to come on in.
Well, that’s what I’ve been told, anyway.

We were on Lake St John on the 4th. My brother is pulling all of our kids on a tube and gets pulled over. He had enough life jackets, an extinguisher… everything. They gave him a ticket for not having anyone spotting the tube. Literally everyone in the boat was watching the tube.
Louisiana wardens should try to be less chicken shite.

WTF? Should the spotter be wearing an orange vest or something?

I went into mine a couple months ago in a similar thread but but I was stopped in Venice the day after I hunted and was ticketed for not checking into/out of a WMA when we had not hunted on the WMA. The GW incorrectly deducted we had from a BS "interrogation" I did not know was even taking place. I have always had fair interactions with GW's and even have one who stays at the camp next door. I really thought we were just shooting the shite but they wrote us both tickets over 1 duck shot legally (not on the WMA) 15 miles away from the closest border to the WMA and 18hrs later.
Rather than argue it out in the middle of the jump I took the ticket and thought it would be better to handle it the "right way".
Clearing up the misunderstanding cost me a day off work and a drive all the way down to that BS court house in BFE Plaquemines parish to plead not guilty. I then wrote a letter to the ADA explaining the misunderstanding. He "graciously offered" to suspend the court date for a year and would dismiss with no more infractions in that time. Apparently the 30+ prior years in the field with no infractions was not enough of a bench mark.
It proved that just running into one of those guys on a bad day will cost you even if you have everything in line. The headache and frustration they put you through to defend against an unjust ticket is usually much greater than just paying a fine and moving on. It's 90% revenue harvesting 10% (maybe) wildlife protection.

It was a female. She kept saying you had to have one designated person. She was being extremely difficult.

Are you supposed to tag ducks on private land? Do people not take them home in tact and clean them there?

They are doing their job and without them you would probably ignore some, if not many, of the rules that are in place for your own safety. By ignoring those same rules you could cost your own life as well as those of others.

Let's not get crazy here.
Their purpose is to protect the public's wildlife and fisheries by enforcing the regulations that protect those resources from rape and pillage. Those animals belong to the public, so the public pays game wardens to look after their interests.
I personally don't think whether or not I wear a lifejacket should be a game warden's business. I want them nailing poachers, wanton waste, etc.
