What's a decent but inexpensive first pocket knife for a kid. 8-9 years old? This is for my nephew. They've lived in the city all his life but will be moving to the "country' in the next few weeks. He's mentioned to his parents that he wants a pocket knife when they move. His dad is not the outdoorsy type so I've told them I wanted to buy him a knife. Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's why I said "decent but inexpensive."

I bought my kids 7 and 9 the kids version of swiss army knife. It has a sharp blade, but a rounded point. It has a saw and a screwdriver. It also has a lock for the big blade.

They like them, but it is a little kiddie looking...I just wasnt sure what to do.

Swiss Army Hiker model is what I just got for my 9yr old. Its his first "good" knife. The Hiker model has the saw blade - which boys think is cool.

Hiker

It fits this belt sheath well.
Sheath

The sheath paired with a paracord lanyard works good for him - The knife is a little big for pocket carry for kids and the lanyard makes it very easy to get out of the sheath.

My first was a swiss army from my grandpa. He told me that a knife is not a toy and to only use it when its needed. I preceded to go in the woods and "cut some limbs" and cut the shite out of myself. I ran all the way home crying and blaming my grandpa for giving me a knife.

My first was a single blade Cub Scout knife with a little Cub Scout emblem on it. Loved that thing.

Something with a lockable blade. When I was young I was doing something stupid and blade closed on my fingers. Not saying he is going to do something stupid with a knife like use it as a screwdriver like I did and sometimes still do, but when a kid gets their first knife they tend to want to use it for anything.

Get him an Old Timer that was his “uncle’s” or “grandfather’s” that he never met. He’ll appreciate it and learn the value of a knife and be much less likely to lose it.
