How much difference is there between the two performance-wise? Is there any noticeable turbo lag on the Eco? Trying to figure out if I should rule out the Eco or not. Not anticipating much towing but don't want to worry about lack of power if I do.

What say da OB?

ECO if this is a daily driver plus minimal towing. In lower gears its just as powerful as the V8. It just sounds terrible.

You will enjoy the better gas mileage when not towing something or during your daily drive.

If you are buying this to tow a trailer everyday then go with the V8 your gas mileage will be about what the ECO gets and it sounds WONDERFUL.

My brother has the 3.5 ecoboost. I have a 5.0. If you’ve never driven the ecoboost before it takes some getting used to. It’s different. The 5.0 has more get up and go from the starting line, but the ecoboost gets up and goes once you get the rpms up a little and the turbos kick in. The difference in fuel mileage isn’t that far off. But the ecoboost does a little better when not towing.

Yeah, I had an Expedition with the 3.5 as a rental and remember it sounded a bit odd to have a big vehicle like that with turbos spooling up but I couldn't remember if there was much lag. How many miles does he have on his 3.5? Any issues with the engine? I'm hesitant to get involved with turbos

His is a 2011. Not sure on the mileage. Definitely over a hundred something. But he’s had no major problems. Just regular maintenance.

2.7 ecoboost with the 3.73 rear end. 20mpg on the interstate and will easily pull anything you put behind it

OB is gonna be all over the place. Simply put, drive both and get what you prefer. Either one will pull what you want.

I've been looking at some '15 and '16 models and it seems like there's only a 20 hp difference in the 3.5 and 5.0. Was curious if there were any other issues between the two.

Probably more problems reported with the 3.5. Just doesn't seem worth the trouble to me

What’s going to last longer? Something that goes 2,000 rpm or something that goes 3,500 rpm with more moving parts.

I'm not 100%, but I think they redesigned the 3.5 to be a bigger 2.7 now. The 3.5 that had the timing chain issues is not the same 3.5 in the new trucks.

I have the 3.5 EB and it's been a great truck for 115K and still going. The thing about this truck is ECO or BOOST,you can't have both at the same time. If you set the cruise at 75 it will get 18-18.5 (4wd, 3.55's, winch and cattle catcher on the front). If you stick your foot in it all bets are off on mileage then.

Towing it is one of the best powered trucks I've ever owned. I pull a JD990 with FEL, loaded tires, and bush hog, a 20ft travel trailer, and a bass boat without any problems at all.

I have had both engines in the last 4 years and I went back with a 5.0 in my 17. I had the 3.5 in my 14 fx4 and well others are right it will pull anything you want but it sucked fuel worse then a tundra. as for the comment about doing 75 and getting 18-mpg never was my case. I got 14-16 mpg avg. with a level and some all terrains. towing I got 8-10 depending on load. I tow my 22' bay boat regularly and it pulled it fine. I have the 17 with a 5.0 and its night and day different. better mpg and it sounds like a truck. I get 18-20 mpg and towing my boat I get 12-13 mpg. its stock besides a level kit and it has 3.55 gears just like my Ecoboost did. its honestly all in what you like and will use it for. after owning both id much rather the 5.0 over the ecoboost.

Just got a 18 3.5eb. I had a 12 5.0 with a roush supercharger. I told the wife I won’t mod the new daily driver and I wanted better mpg. so I gave a eb a try

The 3.5 has some great down low off the line power with the 10 speed and 3.55s I’m really surprised. I think the 3.5 will feel stronger with normal day to day stop and go. Once they both get going they probably feel the same. I’d say you can get better mpg in the 3.5 but since boosted its also easy to chew into that extra mpg. I’m good with the quiet ride this time. Last truck also had roush exhaust so it sounded great but couldn’t use hands free on the phone lol. Go drive both back to back...but so far I’m digging the eb for what I wanted this time.

With that said I poneyd up for an extended warranty as well

We just bought my wife 2017 F-150 with the 3.5L Eco-boost. As I was not involved in the shopping/test driving of the truck and limited experience with the 3.5, I’ve been very surprised with power the truck has.

We recently went on vacation from Cenla to Orlando and back. The truck averaged about 22.5 mpg. Was also surprised by that. I would’ve guessed 18 mpg. I would think that it would be fine towing anything from 4 wheeler/lawn mower up to a mid size boat on a regular basis.

ETA: As I was reading through the thread I saw a few people mention lag with the 3.5. I have not noticed it with this truck. Maybe it’s something that develops as the truck ages or maybe they e fixed that issue.

If 2018, 5.0 hands down.

I have a 2015 3.5 ecoboost. The 2018 5.0 is pushing out crazy amounts of power for a small block.
