Elk hunt

Leaving sept 15 for a two week hunt. Love spending time in the mountains with my mules. They are more like dogs than horses.

Archery, I’m from Montrose Colorado but moved to Arkansas 20 years ago.
I trailer out there. My wife and I raise and train hunting mules. I only had one foal this year but he is coming along so good I think I might keep him.
I train them to lay down to mount and dismount and to shoot off of them. Also to ride and pack and teach them to get used to picket stakes and 3 legged hobbles.
Sorry I am not very tech savvy so no pics or videos but my son can probably download them for me.

That's awesome man. What a great way to hunt. I am leaving for Montana in two weeks for archery and I can't think of much else.

Been to Montrose several times to visit distant family and camp. Hunted in ‘96 and was lucky enough to get a 5x5 on public land.

I met some folks waaay back in the woods while hunting unit 62 that live in hotchkiss by way of Arkansas. I ran into them probably 5 years in a row, but haven’t seen them in a few years.

Very best of luck to you. I hope you have a beautiful and successful hunt. I went to Montana a few years ago with my son, and we struck out. It did not matter, as were awed by the beauty and majesty of the land. I’ll be looking forward to seeing the photos. Godspeed.

Went on a bow hunt with a guide and we packed into the mountain on horses and mules. One night, another fella comes through with a line of goats (I think it was goats) and spooked the mules. They got off the line and took off. We didn't notice until we woke up in the morning. While we hunted that day, the guide went to round up the mules. They were as far as 30 miles off, but he got them all. They walked down the mountain, to the highway, and were on their way home. That feat was almost as amazing to me as the hunt itself.

Might be a dumb question, but what happens when you are riding a mule and they sense a grizzly nearby?

Not sure if all the time but a buddy was telling us a story last year at elk camp.
He was on a mule/horse in Wyoming and had a bluff charge by a grizz. Don’t remember all the details but just laughing as he demonstrated to us how he rode that sucker like lane frost for 1 sec then was laying in the bushes with a yard sale of gear waiting to die ona bear that never charged lol
