My german shepard was a freaking beast. Protective and very friendly. Wish she was still around.
Mine too...

You need a damned ranch and a 1,000 dollar a month meat budget to have one of these dogs.
But yeah, nobody in their right mind would approach your property with this monster prowling the grounds.
Needless to say... I want 3 of them.
ETA: My sister has a German shepard/chow mix puppy. That is the most hyper animal I've ever seen.
She has red fur, a black tail, and a two toned tongue. A very handsome animal.

Dogo Argentions are awesome, but hands down the best guard dog is a Fila Brasilero - take out a big insurance policy if you get one from a reputable breeder bc they are bad arse. I have been around Dogos, canary dogs, Neapolitan mastiffs, Tosa Inus, and other rare breeds and would put the Fila heads and tails above the rest for protection.

What does it cost for one of these?

My catahoula-Australian shepherd mix fricks up any paper towel that makes it in my yard or garbage can. Completely shreds it to pieces!
I'm not sure how far he would go to protect us, but he sure let's us know when someone is around. Makes that person stop what they're doing and look at him. One night he started going apeshit and I went out and looked and sure enough there was a boat shining a flash light in my back yard.

You will not pay less than 1500 for a decent Dogo, Fila, Canary Dog, Neopolitan Mastiff, or any other top guard dog.
The Fila is one hell of a dog. They used them in the jungles of South America to track terrorists. If you ever have the privilege to be around a well bred Fila, you will be in awe.

Id just get one of those little yappy dogs that barks at people at night. I couldn't make myself train a dog to bite people.

except for pitbulls, dobermans, and rottweilers
I had a half lab/half rott who was amazing. Never aggressive but looked intimidating (90lbs).
Now I have a 70 lbs pit mix who is scared of the world but his look will keep people from messing w/ me. Brought him to BCSF to tailgate and a guy wanted to pet him....my dog ran backwards away from him. He's super smart too. Learns new things very quickly.
My bf has a 85 lb pit/mastiff mix who is a really cool arse dog. My bf socialized him w/ people and dogs and we've only heard him act aggressively once. We were asleep and a friend came over but forgot his key was was trying the credit card method to get in the house. Kong charged the door repeatedly and scared our friend enough to leave....and this friend owns a full brother and has known the dog his whole life. He'd never seen him act like that.
And come on....who's going to mess w/ me seeing 3 pits even like this??

Didn't read the entire thread so i don't know if this was said yet.... but bullmastiff is a very good way to go. It is bred into the dog to protect its area, be that just inside or both inside and outside. Its okay to stay inside most of the time, with just normal everyday exercise. Eats a little more than most dogs, but its well worth it. Extremely loyal, great with kids and doesn't mind other dogs generally. They are strong animals, but very obident. My parents raised and showed bullmastiffs for over 20yrs.... I don't own one right now, but when i completely settle down I will. Only buy from a very reputable breeder b/c as with most dogs there are some breed genetics and characteristics you want to try and avoid. Males are much more laid back than the females, but also can weigh upwards of 120-135lbs anything bigger is too fat or not a very good dog and will have health issues. Doesn't need "protection" training, it comes naturally. The dog's bark along will scare away damn near anyone and anything close to your house.

Scratch the R-Ridgebacks, those dogs need hours of exercise per day or they become miserable, can easily go on a 10-mile trot and ask why you are slacking.
We are on our 3rd rescue Dobie, all have been female, and had great experiences with them. The blue was the most friendly with kids but still protected yard and home, although all have been inside dogs. Currently have a 9-yr old Dobe and a 3-yr old AmStaff terrier, or you might call it a Pit Bull, and she never met a stranger. Anyone who is even somewhat a dog person loves her, and she loves kids, she is no guard dog but at 65lbs is rock solid. A friend's 10-yr old daughter wants to take her home every time she visits.
Do not get a Presa Canario unless you are well versed in dog handling, too many morons out there overbreeding them. An inept human and 130lb dog are too much to encounter on hiking trails. German Shepards are awesome dogs, Belgian Malinois much harder to train and fewer make good family pets.
I would look for reputable rescue groups and find a young dog placed with a knowledgeable foster that has had the dog interacting with other dogs and people/kids, you will get to see what its temperament is vs guessing what it might become.
Regardless, we will always have a Dobe and AmStaff, people that have had good ones that put time into working them (not fighting them) for obedience, agility, Odor recognition/nose work, tricks, etc will know what I am talking about.
There is a small lady with two Dogo's in OR class that I'm in with my Dobe, she got them because she was mugged. I like the dogs, and they have had extensive obedience training and doggie day care, I could see where they might be good companion dogs with work put into them.

I'm six pages late i this thread, but has anyone recommended any whiny dog that will bark at the sounds of intrusion plus a 20 gauge with #4?

That is a nice looking American Bulldog! We may opt for one as a family pet - man stoppers but great with kids.
The Cane Corso is a man stopper for sure - offshoot of the Old Roman war dogs as is the Neopitan Mastiff. Any of these man stopper breeds needs to have a very dominant owner who understands the downside of not handling the upbringing correctly.
