When I got mine I just searches the classifieds til I found something I liked. GS are are wonderful. Would love another one day. Just be prepared for hair everywhere only drawback.

Mine could catch frisbees and find anything hidden. She should have been a drug dog. I would throw a ball in the hay barn. She would climb over twenty foot high stacks for hours til she found it no matter how deep it may have fallen.

Yeah.. It's amazing how patient mine was with small children and other small dogs and cats. Really an interesting mix of characteristics that make the breed my favorite. They put up with hair pulling, tail pulling and still watched over them.

I really miss mine, and am not sure I will get another one. Losing a good friend like that is just hard to take.

Energy level is about 13 on a 1-10 scale. They do not stop. Great working dog though. If you can give it the attention it needs they are a basically shorter haired German Shepherd.

Strange. I raised one. That one acted like a typical hunting dog.

8

You can brush it for hour and you will have enough to make a poodle. then two hours later make another poodle. Don't know how she wasn't bald with all the hair I swept and brushed.

She was outside a lot. Only inside when I was home. Slept inside. Bathed two or three times a week and brushed daily.

Lots of similarities between the two.

Maybe not 8 but close. That's the only dog I've ever had inside so I dont have anything to compare to. It was worth it really. She was a part of the family.

I think $200. This was in 1991. All my pics are old school prints. I need to scan some in.

I've owned labs all my life...and would trust not only my wife with ours..but my very own.

Extremely loyal, great with kids and very protective. Some labs are just too friendly to be guard animals...but others are protective over the "home pack". One problem...if/when you guys have kids...you might not be able to discipline the kid in front of a lab. My dad had that problem with our first lab when I was a kid. Max was VERY protective over us. Best dog I ever owned. And found him on the side of the road. May he rest in peace.

Used to be scared of Dobies..but met one in my 20s. Changed my whole outlook on the breed. I understand your concern...and that would turn me off too. Too close!

Been exposed to some police dogs of the Belgian Malinois variety...but they seem a little too destructive early in life. Unruly too. Hit or miss, I reckon.

He is a male. We got him as a pup from the North LA. German Shepherd Rescue. His mom was a Katrina "refugee". Smartest dog I have ever owned. I may be wrong on this but having had a female GS too, I found them to be more "one owner" than my male. Meaning, the female was MY dog, she tolerated everyone else and was slow to obey my wife. My biggest complaints with GS is they Shed a lot (not near as much as my Akita though) and they are very prone to Hip Dysplasia (sp) I would get another one though.

The MC or whatever at Westminster once said,

"There was a time where I would not recommend a Doberman to any family in America. Now, there is no family I would not recommend a Doberman for..." or something like that.

Gotta agree with Roger, German Shepherd is the way to go for you. Won't cost you a crazy amount of money and are wonderful, smart dogs. Just the sight of one is enough to make most criminals shite themselves.

any suggestions are welcome except for pitbulls, dobermans, and rottweilers .

frick you.

How about a doberman?

My dobie is awesome. I had a german shepherd before him. Both are great dogs, and you have just as much chance of getting an overly aggressive german shepherd as any other breed. It's all about finding a good breeder.

exactly, i want my fiance to take this thing for a walk, and have everyone see the dog and say, oh ok... dont frick with that house... EVER

other than the rescue in north LA where would yall reccommend getting a male GS puppy?

most of the rescue sites i come across only have mix GS and they are all over 7 years old... may sound cold, but i want a puppy, so it will become attached to us much more than an adopted pet.
