starting to look around for a dog for the fiance and i. i will be moving away for a sixth month period in about a year, and i want to feel comfortable with her being alone.
looking for a smart dog, easy to train, loyal, protective, not overly agressive. and it must be a Large dog breed.
i have been looking into German Shepherds, but are not very familiar with them, other than the one my granddad had.
any suggestions are welcome except for pitbulls, dobermans, and rottweilers .

I've got a full-sized dachshund (we bought it as a mini) that fits all of your criteria. He's extremely loyal and goes batshit cray when someone rings the doorbell. I can't even take him through a drive-thru window without him trying to eat the workers.

Is there a reason you're avoiding dobermans?
I'd say Akita, but it scares me just to type it.

German Shepards are incredible. But shed endlessly.
Australian Shepards are also good watch dogs. Extremely loyal and easily trained.

That mutant wiener dog of yours is a mean, grouchy sonofabitch.

Last dog I had was a GS and it was an amazing creature. I highly recommend if you want something extremely loyal and will defend you to the death if needed.

I took those (except the wolfhound) off of a list of the most commonly banned dog breeds
OP, get a wolf hybrid

My cousin had one of these. It is a little smaller than what you would consider a "Large dog breed" I guess, but certainly does the job (and you don't have to worry about slobber or shedding). Any burglar or person trying to hurt your wife would have to have some serious gonads to frick with your wife if this dog is standing between him and her. They would also have to have just about no heart to mess with this dog. They can get to be a towering 12inches if fed properly. I highly recommend/suggest you look into this breed of dog; my cousins dog has not let them down yet.

my friend had one, was EXTREMELY aggressive to the point that they had to lock it up whenever anyone came over.... wound up biting me on the inner thigh, way too close for comfort

Not that you would consider it anyway, but the breed pictured below is the absolute worst at guarding the house. Mine doesn't even wake up when someone knocks on the door. I guess after living with me for 10 years, he figures I've got things under control.

Cane Corso. This one is mine. They are loyal, VERY protective, love kids, gentle with their family, and are somewhat aggressive towards strangers. They are the best guard breed in my opinion. Males are usually about 130. Mine is 150 lbs, but EXTREMELY athletic.

A lot of insurance companies have restrictions (liability reasons) so you may want to check on that if you care.
I want a Belgian Melinois. After seeing the military trained ones I fell in love with that breed.
Labs are good choices too. Blackmouth Cur, boxer, and German shepherd are good as well

Any dog over 80 pounds will give a man grief.
A couple of Labradors will tear someone a new arse if you want them to. Friendly, Loyal...and a great multi-tasker. Hunting, House Dog, Couch Potato, Burglar Eater...
Mastiff will eat you into debt...and a short life span.
German Shepherd is one awesome dog. It just doesn't fit my lifestyle as a multi-tasker.
Great Dane will scare the hell out of someone. Eye-Ball to Eye-Ball.
Pyrenean Mountain Dog- Huge, White fur, they are very smart and loyal/protective.
My Top picks.
Edit: 3 Mastiffs Equalled One Lion in the Roman Coleseum. Just food for thought.
