yea, we certainly are not looking for a dog with lots of health problems, which is why im shying away from labs, the one my mom has, had a torn ACL and hip problems when she turned 5.... sad to see, but damn those vet bills are not something i can afford.

we want a dog that will have a good life span, a 7 year life span of a great dane is just too short.

also, we dont hunt, so it doesnt need to have a soft mouth

If you want an intruder to shite their pants, have one of these hiding behind the front door

go to the AKC website and look at the breed descriptions.

Labs can be hit and miss due to the inbreeding. Honestly, the larger breeds don't live very long. If you can live with the hair, that Pyrenean Mountain Dog is monster.

IMO: German Shepherd is a solid choice for you. Look up the Monks of New Skeet in New York. They also publish a bunch of books on training them.

I know a female that was in LSU Med School NO. and she had a German Shepherd destroy a home invading democrat. The dog "took it outside" and ate the arse out of that guy...

Cane Corso. This one is mine. They are loyal, VERY protective, love kids, gentle with their family, and are somewhat aggressive towards strangers. They are the best guard breed in my opinion. Males are usually about 130. Mine is 150 lbs, but EXTREMELY athletic.

All of this.

I had one of these and it was a very different experience from my German Shepherd.

It was obstinate, and I didn't have time to spend to correct all the problems. It had a mind of it's own and was extremely stubborn.

Not even sure how to describe it. She was with me through some hellacious personal times and was just an awesome dog and personal companion. Intelligent and perceptive to the point of being spooky, she would know my personal habits and even show up at the door 5-10 minutes before my normal time of walking through the door.

Extremely protective, the only issue I had with her was that she needed to become acclimated to someone before allowing them to come into the house. She spent quite a bit of time locked up because of that, but she would catch on. She did take someone down once, someone jumped the fence and she grabbed the shirt, took them to the ground. She ended up in doggie jail because of it.

Strangers avoided coming near the yard because of her, but people I knew had no problems coming to the house. They learn who you like, see how you react around people and are damn perceptive, and can read your emotions and reactions.

thats what im looking for, a dog that will see if the fiance is screaming and scared, it will go into protection mode, but if she opens the door and a friend comes in, it will be calm and docile

Exactly how they are. Extremely perceptive animals and learn your emotions, can tell when you are stressed. I have never been around an animal as loyal. A police officer who was part of a k-9 unit once told me that his dog was an extension of himself, and that is how I felt about mine.

When I was having relationship issues with my former S/O, my Shepherd would not like it much when the lady raised her voice and would let her know...

well sounds like a GS is the way to go...

are there any differences in temperament between male or females?
i have had all female dogs... so i was curious to know if the males would be overly agressive? or if the females would not be protective enough?

I currently have a German Shepherd. Very alert and the need to guard family is a strong trait. I also have a Akita. I dont find her over agressive but I trust my s hepherd more in situations with other dogs and non family visitors.

Not sure, mine was female and she was perfect. Some good info on these dogs on the web.

Nice video shot of a GS who led rescuers to a burning home

Get one as a puppy. Let it grow up around you and your family.
