And most of them couldn't tell you what a 4 year old was if they had a birth certificate on them. I have never been a fan of trying to age the deer, but there are a few telltale signs of maturity.

Game cameras have helped take a lot of the guessing out of aging deer.

Too many old school spike killers in LA. That think killing doe is a sin against nature.

No doubt. Wife's family is from AR and they have a antler restriction and my lease in Port Allen had the restriction for a while. The biggest problem I've seen is the smaller 8s get whacked too soon while the 5x1s with bad genes walk. If everyone doesn't get on board and let the 2yo deer walk, you'll be pissing in the wind in LA.

My first buck was a basket rack 8 point. I don't regret it in the least.... Everyone else hunting there was laughing at me. It was a trophy type place.

I was an ecstatic 10 year old. Great memory.

It's damn hard to tell the difference between 3 and 4 year olds. But once those mature fellas hit 5 years... It's pretty clear.

Absolutely, but when you are looking at a deer that isn't on camera, or if you're a guest who hasn't seen all the pictures it's a whole new ballgame. I killed a 134 inch 10 pt. that several of the club's members thought was a 4 year old deer. The jawbone verdict - 2 1/2 years.

That's why the state could use age restrictions.. It would have to be antler. Which sucks.

See, you individually have zero incentive to try to manage, but would benefit greatly from restrictions on the hunters in the NWR. Antler restrictions would directly benefit you.

I guess you're right. It's just the way I was brought up, shoot it if you want, because the nwr hunters will if you don't.

Yep but those times are what got many of us into hunting. Going 20 hunts without seeing a deer isn't going to get many young kids excited or into the sport and having 2 young sons I care about them getting out and enjoying the outdoors. Its hard enough competing against video games and TV to get them outside now a days.

It's tough.

When I'm working a farm or ranch, I always maintain one rule with kids and non-frequent hunters. If you will be proud enough to hang it on your wall, go ahead and kill it.

But if you're just killing for meat or sport, take a doe.

Really the only way to do it. It is easier to age deer now when you get a lot of pictures, but still too hard to do on the hoof. I shot that deer at a club which used to be mainly a meat hunting club. I have the club record still, but after seeing that first one they started letting some deer walk and have seen great results.

I agree, but I think a couple years of statewide sacrifice would go a long way towards the population and not having to sit on stand for years to get your first deer like I did.

I'm definitely not a kill em all hunter, I've killed more does than bucks on that property, but if I'm huntin it and keep seein young bucks other than does and need meat, I have no problem killing it. It's just the way we've done things since we've owned it. There's also been some nasties taken on that property, they're there, just few and far between.

May have been, but you have to have does to attract the bucks and you have to have does to make more bucks.

Habitat loss is killing the overall herd.

Question about this. Old timers have always told me there is way more woods now then there was when they were coming up since everything was farmland. I know there is obviously more houses and such but compared to entire parishes being cotton fields back in the day. Do yall think habitat loss in La is affecting the deer much?

Just the amount of "take" and "harvest" used in this thread makes me

We kill deer. We harvest corn. We take women out to eat.

I messed up and tried to plant my deer in the ground so I could harvest them, and the damn hurricane came and killed em.

When you are getting out of the truck do you "get down?"

In my parish there was a lot more pasture land but also a lot less pines. I know of one area that is about 1k acres that use to be cattle, and sweet potatos fields with big sections of hardoods. There were some really good deer killed there in the 90s all over 20 inches wide. Now its all planted in pines with box stands and feeders. Now a basket rack 8 is a good buck there.

There is also the issue with numbers of hunters. Hard to find land here that isn't under some type of lease and with the price per acre you have 2 people for every 100 acres hunting.

Christmas week in W.Feliciana parish a deer can't fart without a hunter smelling it.

ETA: The term harvest to me implies that you grown that deer, watched it mature, then chose the time that you feel is right to kill it. Not many low fence places around here can pick and choose what deer and when they will kill it.

I know about that all too well.
