I wonder how many of these guys who shoot anything brag about the size of the fish they catch.

I know what's going on in my area and deer numbers are way down. Unfortunatly I think its a result of both loss of habitat and everybody watching to many hunting shows thinking the need to kill more does because Lee and Tiffany said so

This.

We have had a serious loss in the deer population. I think that is why the state is trying to go back to doe days. Time was that it was no problem to see a lot of deer, now with the spraying of the pine stands, there is nothing for deer to eat for huge swaths of land.

Or you could shoot a doe like a lot of us do. I didn't kill a buck this season and have plenty of deer meat.

All I killed was 2 does this year, 0 bucks

For the other poster about me acting like I only hunt for meat. I can see how you get that impression, I mean, i did say I only hunt for meat I enjoy the peace and quiet with hunting and I cant wait for my two boys to get big enough to hunt. The oldest is 3. Obviously if I stopped hunting I wouldnt starve, but me personally, hunting public land, keeping the same old wore out hunting clothes Ive had for years saves me alot of money killing a deer for the amount of meat we get. I just dont spend much money on hunting.

I have 0 problems if people only kill good size bucks, I just disagree with it being state law or whatever for it.

He is not asking for a 20" spread and or main beam type of rule. Something simple, to improve the overall quality of the deer in our great state. I don't think that is to far fetched.

Like I said, a good chunk of MS falls under the 10" spread rule. We're talking basket racks and a fair amount of spikes that would surpass that.

Bingo

* 3 points on one side

or

* Require hunters to harvest a doe before they can take a buck

or

* If you kill a spike/button buck you surrender the rest of your buck tags

There are lots of ideas out there... These are just a few off the top of my head. You really just want to encourage hunters to take better deer.

I would like to put regulations on it but I can see where others don't . I have a 6 year old that would be ecstatic to kill a spike . But can anybody honestly say that they would rather kill a pencil horned 6 point or a 140 inch 8 point ?

Exactly what you are talking about is working in the state of Mississippi right now.

I hunt on 5000 acres and our rule is 16" wide or a 20" main beam. When we started the deer that made the requirement were scarce. After 3-4 years we are seeing results. The average body weight has increased and their is no question that our average antler size has increased.

I agree children should be able to shoot small deer until 16 or so, to keep them interested.

My family owns abour 300 acres that backs up to NWR. So they kill everything that walks. Trying to implement management on my property is like pissin in the wind.

There would definitely have to been some kind of exception to the rule in this case.

Too many old school spike killers in LA. That think killing doe is a sin against nature.

See, you individually have zero incentive to try to manage, but would benefit greatly from restrictions on the hunters in the NWR. Antler restrictions would directly benefit you.

Ftr I've never said if I'm for or against antler restrictions being enforced by the state. Personally I don't feel that it would have that great of an impact. I'm more concerned with deer numbers right now.

When we hunted 8pt or better it was hard to let that bordeline shooter walk when it was the only one you saw that year, including shootable does.

20 years ago there were dog clubs and brown its down clubs all over around here and they were seeing 20 deer a hunt.

And most of them couldn't tell you what a 4 year old was if they had a birth certificate on them. I have never been a fan of trying to age the deer, but there are a few telltale signs of maturity.
