Or you could shoot a doe like a lot of us do. I didn't kill a buck this season and have plenty of deer meat.

You talk like your only outlet for food is hunting.. I mean seriously, Im not about "killing trophy deer" or "eating antlers". I hunt for meat, i hunt for the comraderie, i hunt for the quiet, secluded time in nature. I hunt for the rush, and im not scared to admit that. And I get much more rush out of shooting at an old, mature buck with years of experience and wisdom much more than shooting a spike because by God i have to feed my family.
Downshift, i know your stance very well, and i respect it. But im not talking about such drastice measures, that you wont be able to kill anything on your lease. and maybe on private land they could allow a certain number of "culls'. But to the guy talking about hunting public and not seeing deer for days and wanting to be able to shoot a spike if he sees it... Uhhhhh... If there were resrictions, you would start seeing more deer. And i enjoy encountering deer, watching their quirky activites just as much as taking one. I have hunted a lot of public land my whole life, and it wasnt until i was in a 8pt or better club until i saw some of the more interesting things in nature, like bucks fighting etc., because we arent shooting the first thing we see.

You're blowing size restrictions out of proportion

Key word in your statement HARVEST. I'm not a deer farmer so harvest is an inappropriate term. I raise cotton from a seed then harvest it once it mature. Seeing as how I dont own the wildlife on my land I can not raise it to maturity in order to harvest...so I KILL what I feel is appropriate on my property.
So you don't supplement feed, plant a food plot, fertilize natural grasses, or produce habitat conducive to deer habitat? If you commit any of these acts you are contributing to the development of the animals/wildlife that reside on your property. Therefore, you are essential contributing in the same ways that a FARMER does to his cotton. Although, the nutritional value of cotton is pretty shitty, so your herd is probably under-developing.

Its not so much that im concerned about the SIZE of the antlers. But you will start seeing more bucks in general. Trust me, i have seen the difference. We too over 700 acres a couple years ago. First Fall, we had 2 8pts on camera.. We kille 2 8pts that year (different deer). this Fall, we had 9 8pts and a big 10pt on camera.. we killed 5 8pts.. Cant wait till next season

Or you could not tell us how to manage our land and let us do whatever the hell we want on it, while yall do what yall want on yalls.
If I need meat and I'm hunting my property and a spike walks out, I will shoot it. If I'm hunting someone else's property and they would like me to shoot a certain sized deer, then I will because it belongs to them. I don't need the man telling me what I can shoot.

My opinion is that hunting shows have actual improved the sport. They have educated, informed, and built a respectable image for hunters. Hunting shows have expanded the hunting industry, and produced a desire and a market for better hunting equipment and safer practices.

Ohhhh but it HAS to be a buck, because that makes it an accomplishment

If you mean do I try to shoot mature does, yes I do. This season I had a doe I was unsure about. Watched her for 45 minutes until a few other does came out and realized she was bigger than I thought. I also take into account the size/age of any young ones with her and if they can fend for/defend themselves.

How much land do you have? The size of your property could help determine the effect that quality management practices would have. You might be the victim of poor management by your neighbors... Do you want them shooting anything that walks?

Until your land connects to mine, and im trying to do something besides shoot EVERYTHING i see, and you are doing the complete opposite

Ok, while I know I reflect your views of deer management much more then the opposite side of the argument, LDWF already tells us what, when and how we can kill animals.
Otherwise people would kill many more deer at night and such.
I feel the state should be broken into areas that the same habitat and the same rut, and have CONSERVATIVE restrictions in place.
We all know St James aint gonna produce deer like Tensas.

Same here. I work harder to harvest a mature doe.

I concur, but it seems as if not many people actually grasp this concept.

I know, its automatically about "Being trophy hunters" "losing sight of what hunting is about" "the man controlling my deer herd"

I will try..

Exactly. Properties where we've focused on conservation and restrictions have made for a sparse first 2-3 season... But after that, it's like a paradise... Common hunters just seem to lack patience.
