It's a 20 mile open water run to where I redfish. A paddle won't do me shite. If I lose big engine and trolling motor I have sea tow.

Typically around the same for me. No way I'm paddling back. I've got a Garmin sat messenger & sea tow if SHTF.

Of course.

I thought it was required like life jackets, throw cushion, fire extinguisher, etc.? (Not that I've ever been asked to see it when getting checked though now that I think about it.)

Hell yes I do. Broke down way up the Amite on a Tuesday. Not another boat around. Middle of the summer. My truck was on Bayou Manshac.
Paddled a LONG way before I found some one to help. My little boat is only 14 foot and light. It almost killed me.
I have a decent trolling motor now for such events. Still keep the paddle.

You need to learn the skulling thing. Just sit on the front of the boat and move the paddle back and forth. Very little effort to get a 14' boat to move along at 5 mph. Almost don't need a trolling motor.

You going out there tomorrow? We are planning on it. NOAA says 1-2. WF and PW both have it less than 1. We shall see

I may sleep in and then go chase some 3tails before hitting a beach somewhere. I've convinced myself it's going to be choppy early and then lay around lunch.

Always. Even if it’s a cheap collapsible paddle.

You never know

This.

I didn't have one in my 24 bay boat, and it died cold turkey on me in the Ship Channel with my family in the boat. Full electronic failure, no trolling motor either. Luckily another boat pulled me to shore quickly and got us out of the way.

Worst feeling ever on a boat in all my years of boating.

Yes.

And a spare prop, nut, wrenches, tow rope, etc.

Being stranded in middle of Apalachicola National Forest because of something simple is not ideal.

Land of extremes, but most boats here have clamp on cleats and two oars in their boats.

Yes, I had to tie it to the engine once as use it as a tilling when my steering cable broke. Worked like a charm.

My dad is always telling me stories. One that I remember.

Ny grandpa had a 23’ wooden boat with a flat front on it and center console type thing in the middle. This was a very old boat he got and restored himself. We are talking late 50’s time frame. Anyway. They ride out and go fish the mouth of four bayous pass. Not long after trying to head in the engine kills and grandpa cannot get her started. It’s getting dark and he’s concerned about being swept out into the gulf so my dad and his brother and papa start paddling back home. Big shrimp boat comes by but refuses to help because they are heading offshore. Night fall hits and my dad and his brother slept on the deck under some news paper while grandpa kept paddling. Eventually the next morning someone came by and pulled them in.
Listening to these old stories of my father and grandpa fishing is my favorite thing.

We have to in Florida. The water Nazis that are happy to ignore drunk tourists in their pontoon rental or jet skis will happily stop you for no reason and give you a fine for not having a plastic paddle in your 24’ center console. You know, for safety reasons.

And a handheld VHF radio. You can always catch the CG.

This. Can never be too prepared.
