I buried another dog in the backyard. My daughter’s dog was hit by a car last night. There’s now three graves back there.

I was just wondering if everyone else still buries their buddies or is that old hat? When my Shepard died last year, the vet asked if I was taking him home. I said yes but didn’t remember that conversation until this evening when I was dressing the grave.

Yes. I find something therapeutic about digging a grave. As a result I tend to dig quite large and overly deep holes. But in the moment I don't want to stop and have to say goodbye forever.

I know of a farming family in Ms that insists on digging their own graves for their relatives. Sort of a tradition.

I have been lucky enough not to lose my first pup as an adult. Ive had him since he was 5 weeks old. Hes now pushing 7 years old. I dread the day he is gone. But when that day comes, he will have a proper burial. Hes a good boy.

My dad always taught me to not waste meat so we eat them.

Y'all know I'm just kidding. My first lab I raised by myself was sixteen when he passed. I cried the whole time I dug the grave, my dad had to help I was so shaken. We bury all our dogs by a big ole pecan tree by the pond that most of them hunted all their lives.
I make the sign of the cross as if I'm passing in front of a church when I pass that tree.

the 2 i had when i was a kid ran away. the first 2 i had as an adult got stolen. I have a big akita mutt that is about 8 now, IDK what I am going to do when he goes, he's my buddy. I had found a little terrier mutt a few years back while I was hunting. That dog was a straight up terrorist, would bite my dad almost weekly (he deserved it) and killed everything she could. Coyotes killed her back in august. My dad buried her before I got home. I kind of wish he would have stuck her in the fridge for me like I asked and let me do it. I miss the frick out of that little dog.

Absolutely! I consider my dog part of the family, so it's the least I can do for it!

Buried one at a spot in bonne carre where he sealed the deal on a hard to get ribbon.

Others in spots that meant a lot as well.

When I was a youngster one of the guys that got me into bird dawgs accidentally backed over a great gsp.... I took it about a mile from his house near an old barn where much training and hunting took place. Buried it for him.

About 3 days later one of English setters got out and was gone for a day...

Dog went and found his brace mate was trying to dig him up....

Went the cremation route on our golden a few years ago. We were renting at the time and I didn’t want to put him in the ground there and us leave. They brought us a nice urn and a plastered paw print.

Cremated my weim in July. I mixed her ashes and stone mix, put her pic in it, and let the kids decorate it. It was kind of therapeutic for all of us. Digging a deep hole in July was not appealing to me. To each his own though. However, I wish our bastard vet would’ve told us how much that shite costs to have a 80lb dog cremated. I may have chosen to dig the hole.

What did it cost you, if you don't mind me asking?

Yep, last one I buried watched me did it for him and it took all afternoon. Wife dreamed about that dog and my dad last night, said she woke up happy. 2nd is resting in my walk-in closet since I can’t bring myself to pour his ashes out and it’s been 12 years. He was the first dog that taught me about training soft dogs + he forgave me my mistakes.

Our last 2 were cremated, and we actually buried the ashes. My dogs are my children, not sure I could just put them in a hole and throw dirt over it (not that there is anything wrong with that), I just couldn't do it.

We went to a local stone company and had their names put on a stone, placed over where we buried them.

I’m also cheap lol.

Another issue with burying the dog was that my wife and I are always looking at homes and hope to move/build. So we didn’t want to bury her and leave her so to speak when we move
