No, no one has said that they shouldn't legally be allowed. Several people have said they are angry that Dicks is making things political, and bringing publicity to the gun control issue, and I didnt interpret those comments to be based on a belief that Dicks needs to make better business decisions.

Sad thing is there’s probably people who actually do this.

Then I'll just assume they are part of the now alienated consumer base. They can criticize, show Dick's receipts from stores where they made purchases with notes attached saying "You lost my business", log on to an online message board calling them out, etc.

I mean what else are you supposed to do in a bunker with 129039120 loaded p-mags till the apocalypse starts?

We're obviously having some miscommunication so let's clear the air.

I never meant to suggest that they didnt have the right to do all these things, just that it's dumb and Dicks could care less.

Maybe it is. Dick's probably doesn't care. Their CEO seems to have a strong stance on guns. But, all businesses play the game of margins, customer retention, yada yada yada. If the board sees that their sociopolitical campaign is costing them money, they'll ditch the CEO and go in another direction.
Never underestimate the power of the individual consumer.

I went into Dick's when they first opened in Monroe. They were higher than Academy, so I never went back. To be honest, I usually only buy sale items in Academy anyway.
When I go to Lafayette (2-3 times a year), I always go into Field & Stream. That's a really cool store to check out. I assume it's still the only one in the state.
The last time down, I looked at (held) the Walther Creed 9mm, liked it, and then ordered one from CDNN Sports for $269.99 ($100 less than F&S). I've bought ammo from them three or four times. I have ordered sale-priced fishing clothing online from them. Get emails from them, and will probably continue to visit the F&S store when in Lafayette. If I find stuff cheaper than I can get it up here in NELA, or online, I'll probably still buy from them too.

So running their business the way they want makes them anti American? That’s quite a stretch.
Medical Practice is a business too. How about I stop providing medical services to all libs? How's that gonna work for ya? Or maybe if I only stop providing to gays, or some race/s? Just running a business the way I want to.

Is that a counterargument?

That’s me laughing at you for telling someone not to underestimate the power of an individual consumer.
Posted on 4/17/18 at 6:36 pm to Sidicous
You can run your business like that in most cases, and the free market can decide what it thinks of that.

Oh, okay. So you don't want to contribute to the thread?

Not gonna be convincing many people with this ad hominem.
Typically the one who loses the argument is the one who insults the other first. Just my opinion though.

Considering the CEO’s father founded the company, I think he’s fairly safe and has the board behind him.
And your statement was rediculous, it’s on you to defend it. The entire point here is that the individual consumer doesn’t matter. Dick’s is a Fortune 500 company. A hundred or so guys getting pissy over this is a rounding error in their sales, assuming they even bought guns or even shopped there in the first place, and the overwhelming response is they never did. This is virtue signaling about virtue signaling.

Tom also noted, Dick's could have donated their AR's to LEO's around the stores that had stock available, taken a charitable donation write off, and earned PR for Backing the Blue and lessening the need for LEO to raise taxes to equip their officers.
I think this would've been a good idea, as well.

ETA: I think this is a good idea assuming they had enough quality ARs to make it worthwhile, Im just not sure from a PR standpoint it would be all that effective.
OTOH, you're right that even a charitable gesture from Dick's to the law enforcement community might've resulted in some bad PR, depending on the demographics of their core customers. Like others, I don't see Dick's core customers as hunters, shooters and fishermen; i think it's mainly soccer moms buying sports equipment for their kids and exercise equipment for theirselves. They might see Dick's more favorably for destroying the AR's instead of donating them to law enforcement. The fact that Dick's chose NOT to donate the guns tells me that their marketing dept knew destruction to be the better choice.
