it depends what you call successful. Their stock price has taken a 50% hit since 10/2016, and that is with recovering some since late 2017.

That's hard to attribute to their stance on AR15s though. Big box stores all over have taken massive hits, and dick's doesn't really sell essentials to people, they are easy purchases for people to start bargain hunting online for.

did I say that's why it fell?

I was just replying to the guy that said they are successful and know what they are doing.

No that's true you didnt, I could have phrased my response to that better

I more offered that thought up since other posters have implied the gun decision dicks made has had an effect on their bottom line.

Guns, fishing, hunting, etc is there to give dad something to browse and talk himself into buying while mom spends $600 on the kids sports shite, shoes, and clothes. The inventory they carry in these departments doesn't matter, as evidenced by the fact that it's terrible, as long as Dad doesn't realize he's actually been dragged into the travel ball version of JC Penny.

Dick's 100% ran the numbers on this and realized they are making pennies on AR15s due to the relative margins and cost of inventory, could dump the hassle, and likely could score a little more of the 20 something running crowd as a bonus by having this story briefly trend on social media.

You're probably right.

Nevermind online sales dominating major retailers. Let’s jusf let the nerds think that their boycott is working. Hell, most of the boycotters probably shopped elsewhere anyway.

Their stock price rose after Sandy Hook when people made the same statements about how pulling ARs would be their downfall.

They're getting killed by online retailers, like all box stores. This is a move to dump a product that wasn't contributing to their bottom line and gain some PR in the process.

I really don't understand why anyone would boycott a business because they're destroying part of their inventory. This has zero affect on me or my ability to buy a firearm elsewhere.

This isn't why people are boycotting them; it's their underlying stance on the 2nd amendment

They already have in some stores. The guns and ammo department gets replaced with an expanded selection of (cheap) kayaks, which they sell the ever-loving piss out of.

I think you are confusing "not selling anymore" and "destroying remaining inventory". It's not going to hurt them to stop selling ARs, but to destroy the inventory you have already paid for will.

Good points. I wonder how many AR's they'll really destroy vs sell to a different gun seller. This could well more of a PR ploy where they announce they're destroying AR's (to appeal to their consumer base of soccer moms buying workout clothes) only to destroy a few AR's and sell the majority of them to a different seller.

I have never shopped at Dicks and probably never will. Has nothing to do with their stance. I simply find everything I want at Academy or online.

That and the one in BR is located by the mall. the traffic alone is enough to make me shop elsewhere.

I never got the impression Dicks was a significant firearms place anyway. Too many other options to worry about them.

You could still mess with them over their 2A stance. Do like I heard Tom Grisham on the radio say the other day: Every purchase made at another sporting goods store, scan the receipt, email the "contact us" at Dick's a copy with a note stating: "If you weren't an Anti American Company you coulda had this sale!" If 10,000 people do this once/month, a message really gets sent in black/white how much it costs Dick's to be a dick.

Tom also noted, Dick's could have donated their AR's to LEO's around the stores that had stock available, taken a charitable donation write off, and earned PR for Backing the Blue and lessening the need for LEO to raise taxes to equip their officers.

I think you're grossly overestimating how much really strong 2A folks shop at Dicks, Doubt it cost them no where near that many sales.

The real number they will care about is how much their balance sheet changes.

earned PR for Backing the Blue

I'm not even sure this would be good PR for them across the board. There are tons of people who don't view the police as needing more weapons like this. The transfer program with the DOD takes a ton of heat.

ETA: I think this is a good idea assuming they had enough quality ARs to make it worthwhile, Im just not sure from a PR standpoint it would be all that effective.
