Couldn't agree more... Never thought Id see the day a bunch of republicans would be screaming about how it's wrong for a private business to do as it pleases.

It's more of the fact they are willing to take a financial loss to make a political statement. They can do whatever they want and it won't make a difference to me. I keep my gun purchases local.

How much of a loss are they really taking? I can’t see dicks making any significant profits in that market.
Posted on 4/17/18 at 8:44 am to Redfish2010
I haven't read the entire thread but I don't think I've seen anyone claim an infringement upon their rights.
Criticizing a retailer and refusing to do business with them is just as much part of capitalism as is a retailer refusing to sell a product for sociopolitical reasons.

Because this isn't political talk.

Anyone want to bet they rue their decision to shite on all 2nd amendment folks?
Soccer moms buying sports gear and folding chairs don't give a shite about AR15s. Dicks has the worst selection of guns, fishing, and outdoor gear of any box store. They offer guns mainly to get suburban dads to impulse buy a pistol. The margins aren't shite compared to chinese workout clothes, and the people who shop there don't care about this issue enough for it to affect their bottom line.

Neither one of you guys understand what's going on in this thread

I think you are confusing "not selling anymore" and "destroying remaining inventory". It's not going to hurt them to stop selling ARs, but to destroy the inventory you have already paid for will.
I'm all for businesses doing whatever they want. I just hate when they make things political.

No one I know will shop dicks now. Not to be one of those guys that issues a perfunctory meaningless "everyone hates dicks now" comments, but it's true. You stand against 2A and you're gonna piss people off.
I don't take it personally. It's their business to decide what they want to do, and of course any business is going to do what they think is in the best interest of their bottom line. At the end of the day, I impersonally choose to let them know my money will not go there.

I think you are overestimating how many 2A folks did an appreciable amount of business at dicks/field and stream. There core market seems to be the soccer moms buying workout clothes or stuff for their kids little league sports.
I stopped shopping there for any of my hunting/fishing/shooting needs long before this simply because they sucked in these departments to begin with. More often than not when I did go there to buy something they just didn't have it.

It’s no different than chic fil a putting out their stances on certain issues, businesses have that right, just like the consumer has the right to do business with them. I don’t care enough to “boycott” a business because of its political beliefs, but if you do, hey that’s your prerogative.

Y’all said the same shite when they pulled AR15s after sandy hook, then again when they stopped selling bump stocks. Yet Dicks is still slinging shin guards and bat bags.
Posted on 4/17/18 at 9:20 am to TheDrunkenTigah
Gun nerds drastically overestimate the “power” they have. Soccer moms, golfers, runners, etc couldn’t give 2 shits about dicks 2A stance.

Agreed.
As the OP mentioned, this probably wasn't some knee jerk reaction by Dick's. The Accountants broke out their P&L statements for the gun dept, the Market Research folks forecasted the consumer impacts and the Honchos made a decision.
Frankly, I don't care. Dick's can sell whatever they like.
We have a local grocery chain in LA that projects their religious/political beliefs onto the public by refusing to sell lottery tickets (Ironically, they're fine with sellling cigarettes and alcohol) at their stores. Fine ... it's their choice. It was inconvenient to me a grand total of one time about 10 years ago. Now I know Rouse's doesn't sell lotto tickets and if I find myself wanting one, I know to go somewhere else. But that minor inconvenience doesn't make me want to boycott Rouse's. It would be like boycotting Chic-fil-A because they're closed on Sundays. Who cares? It's their business, let them run it as they see fit.

Yes. Yes they do. and who cares if they destroy the guns? That’s the silliest stuff to be upset over.

Spreading information that some may not have been aware of and having an adult convo. What Dick's does or doesn't do is their biz but people may want to vote with their wallets.

You're right. I don't agree with it. When all that came about I was like how about you just shut up and keep slinging them delicious chicken nugs.

Me either. I don't have the time to boycott a business. My thoughts are if you have a good product or business then you get my business. All I am saying is how about we leave politics out of it.
Posted on 4/17/18 at 10:03 am to Wtodd
We stopped having an adult conversation when the thread title included “goes full retard”
Posted on 4/17/18 at 10:11 am to jdavid1
You bring up a good point about politics. But, no one is discussing potential gains here.
Dicks market is not focused on gun nuts and overly paranoid conservatives. However, they appeal to a younger, more active. I can’t quantify it but I’d argue that there’s going to be an increased customer loyalty, for those who don’t support the sales of AR’s. Especially outside of the Deep South.

That’s probably a good assumption. Dicks would probably do better by getting rid of all it’s firearms and replacing it with something else. The majority of dicks shoppers aren’t paranoid, from my cold dead hands types. You don’t get to be as big and successful as dicks by being stupid. They know what theyre doing.
