I like both the 270 and 7mm-08. I like my sons 7mm-08 that I want to trade him. Shot my only deer this year with his gun.

With that said, my buddy did an African hunt this year and the gun he rented was a 308. Said it dropped everything he shot.

That’s good to hear. Just bought my 9yr old son a Ruger American Compact in 7mm-08. I put a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x50 on it. I plan on using it myself when he’s not with me.

My wife shoots a Marlin .30-30,best deer on our wall is hers,190 lb 11 point. She’s killed 15 with it,never missed one and they never run more than 20 yards. Her longest shot was 165 yards.I wanted to get her a youth model 7mm-08 bolt action and she saw she didn’t want it,likes her 30-30.

Pretty much any common or semi common center fire caliber will kill whitetail just fine at the ranges the vast majority of people shoot them. Use a good bullet and put it in the right place and you’ll be fine. .308 is a great and very versatile round.

That being said, what kind of gun buyer are you? Is this just to fill a niche or will this be your last rifle purchase for a decade? If the latter, then other potential uses will play more of a role. If the former, then I am a big fan of keeping it on the smaller side with the .243.

If I were buying tomorrow, I’d buy a Win Mod 70 Featherweight in .30-06.

I bought 4lsu2jr a 7-08 Ruger American Compact a few years ago when he was 3ish. He’s 7 now. He and I hunted with it a few times last season and he never got a shot. I took it on an out of state trip last season as a back up gun and ended up hunting with it the first morning being that I was set in a climber. I took a doe with it at 50 yards and was impressed with the outcome The first sit. I ended up hunting with it the entire trip and took 3 shots with 3 dead in track kills hunting in a river bottom.

Hornady 139 grain SST.

vanguard series 2 in a 308

That's about as good as you can do for a deer gun. I have two vanguards and both have great triggers and shoot great. they're basically an improved rem 700.

.308 is a fantastic deer calbier

Folks will say what they say but it’s hard to put down the trusty Rem 700 .243..... it just keeps knocking them down. That said i do love my 7mm08, 30-06 and 35 whelen if i need to stretch it past 200.

I’m planning on going back to my marlin .30-30 when I do carry a rifle for deer. It’s just so handy and easy to carry and point. Unless you have a shot past about 150 yards, it’s pretty tough to beat.

If you want something else, I’d start with .270 or .308.

Guns are a long term investment. What you buy you may give to your children or grandchildren years from now. A little more money spent will pay dividends in my opinion.

Weatherby Vanguard is the same gun as a Howa. Best values are in used guns if in good shape. I never buy new anymore. I have a Tikka T-3X and a Sako 75 both in .308. The Tikka has a wood stock (as god intended rifle sale to have) and the Sako has a synthetic that's I hate about half as much as most synthetic stocks I've handled. It's the predecessor to the rubberized ones that have given Browning fits lately.

Spend as much or more on your scope as you do in your rifle. I have bought several Zeiss Conquests for less than the equivalent Leupolds. .

Since you are a lever gun man, find you a savage 99 in .300 savage, get it fixed up nice.

Love my .25-06

Me too. Drops em like the hammer of Thor.

That said, find a rifle that you can shoot well. Shot placement is 1000 times more important than caliber. If you are recoil shy, stay away from some of the larger magnum calibers.

One thing to think about as well. I know sometimes the newest, latest, greatest calibers sound appealing but if you forget your ammo is the caliber you selected going to be available at most any country store? 243, 270, 308 , 30-06, 300 & 7mm mag etc ammo is available most anywhere you stop.
