So I got back into hunting last season and I’m looking to upgrade my old marlin 3030. I’ve had my eyes on the Weatherby vanguard series 2 in a 308. But I’m still on the fence.

Nothing wrong with .308. Why are you on the fence?

I have a Weatherby vanguard in 308 and I've shot a lot of deer with it.

That is why is asked if you were trying to start a fight.

Just get a rifle and caliber you like. Don’t get what someone else likes.

I have that exact rifle and caliber and love it. Great fit and finish for the price and very accurate. Plenty of good options in the same price range, but I can highly recommend the Weatherby.

Unless you are hunting pipelines I would keep using the 30-30. 150yds and under excellent deer gun. Use the $ for other toys

If you want a short action, get a 308 or a 7mm 08.
If you want a long action get a 270 or a 30-06.
4 common, standard calibers that work great.

The 7mm 08 is just slightly less common than the other 3 but may be the best pure whitetail caliber there is. The 30-06 is overkill for deer, but it's the 30-06 and it's the most common, versatile cartridge in America.

There are so many really good rifles out there right now for really good prices.

One thing that I’d tell you on calibers is that it doesn’t take anywhere near what most people think or hunt with to take one. My son has killed one with a 6.5 grendel and a 6.8 spc both in ARs.
That being said, I have several rifles that I take hunting with me. 2 AR-10s one 6.5 cm and the other in .308. The 6.5 cm is extremely accurate But extremely heavy (15+lbs with silencer). I have several bolt actions. My favorite for hunting around here is a Ruger American Predator in .308. It has an 18” barreL which combine with a silencer is a really good length. It’s pretty accurate but getting more so as I shoot it more and am finding a good load for it.

You say that like the 6.5g isn't a fantastic hunting rounds capable of taking anything we have here in the south.

My personal faves are 223 with 243 a distant 2nd....

What I mean is that there are so many people that think they need 300 win mag minimum to kill a deer.

If your wife or daughter ever plans to shoot it, get a .270

270,308, or 3006. Can’t go wrong with any of them for southern whitetail.
