Just getting into deer hunting recently and would like to purchase a rifle with manageable recoil as I have a bum shoulder. Was considering .243, .257 Roberts and 7 mm .08. Would like to get one with scope for $700. Any recommendations on other calibers I should consider or best place to find bargains? Thanks.

You can find a good used rifle at a pawn shop scoped out in the $700 range easily. Browing A bolts, or Ruger M-77's are 2 that come to mind I see often in that price range.

For whitetails get 7-08. Great round. Tikka btw. I should add the .284(7-08) ballistics are really the perfect marriage for a whitetail round

Or, you could get a extremely nice used but like new Browning A-Bolt .243 with synthetic stock, B.O.S.S. for about 600 bucks. I know just the person selling one.

I have one of these and it's a great combo gun. Having the Nikon scope with the BDC reticle is nice. You'll have money left over for ammo and a case for it. It's on sale for $519 but I've seen them for $479 at academy. Good luck.

I just got a Ruger American 30-06 and put a Leupold Vxi3 scope on it for less than $700.

Remington 700. Academy had the SPS woodtech on sale for $430. Not sure if they still are. The ADL is $379 I believe. Best action on a budget gun. I like Vortex scopes but Nikon's are good. You can find both starting in the $150-$200 range.
308 or 270. If you worried about recoil get a limbsaver pad. The screw in version is around $35 and the felt recoil will be minimal. A 243 would kill a deer but its a little small.

If you want the best price sportsmansguide.com is a great place to look. They will show you a list of the FFL dealers they have on file in your area if you don't have one. They offer a 30 day free trial membership so you can just get your gun and then cancel your membership.

$700 is plenty. I have a Savage Axis. 308 and a Vortex 3-12 Hog Hunter Scope. Together a little over $600.

I hunt with a Savage Axis. It is well under your budget and a damn good gun for the price.

I mean they wont compare to a higher end rifle. In the $400 range they are hard to beat. After a good scope that would put him near his budget. I picked up a Ruger American on sale and flipped it. It wasn't for me. The stock was flimsy and I didn't like the action. Never shot it so I can't comment on that. I have a 300 win mag in the woodtech and it shoots about .5" to .75" at 200 yards. I wouldn't pay the $650 price for it but at $430 its a good rifle. Ive never held an ADL but I have held the savage axis and I didn't like it either. I have read the magazine on the savage axis is terrible. Plus there are unlimited upgrade options on a 700

Tika's are nice and I have saw a few places that have them on sale recently. Something else to checkout.

Buds Gun Shop Howa Rifle

If you can find a Howa with a Hogue OverMolded Stock in Stainless Steel, I would jump on it. I bought one as a rifle to let friends borrow and it outshoots about anything I've ever seen or had built.

Won't speak to the gun other than to say, please don't buy anything new in Remington. Their products just aren't what they use to be.

A 7mm-08 would be a really good round for you with a bum shoulder. It's a really impressive round.

There was a thread on here on Monday (I think that's right) where a 14yr old girl killed the NE record Elk with a 7mm-08 at 200yds.

Light recoil and knocks the crap out of them...

I'd get an older Rem 700 or Model 7 via La Sportsman or similar site.

manageable recoil

I got a Weatherby Vanguard in 25-06 last year. It's actually made by Howa. I think the gun was $450 ish at Bud's Guns. Weatherby Vanguards rate really well in the "budget" rifle category. It's got a raised comb stock, and a very nice two stage trigger. Very enjoyable to shoot from a recoil standpoint and plenty enough power to take down anything in Louisiana. I scoped it with a Burris that Cabela'a had on sale for $150 (regular $300) and I got another $50 off for opening a Cabela's Visa. I might have gone a different direction on the scope in hindsight, but it's decent enough.

I was able to shoot 1" groups at 100 yards. I bought a case of Hornady American Whitetail rounds for less than $1/shell from Midway.

In my first hunt, I hit a Bobcat that was in full trot away from me. It entered just left of the bung hole, and completely blew out its abdomen, so I'm confident it's plenty of round for deer.
