What is the customary tip for an offshore fishing trip?
(Let's hope this thread doesn't go 15 pages and involve someones business being trashed)

~20%
Say $1300 boat + $600 fuel + $350 tip.

you're tipping on fuel cost?

Trip cost. The amount of fuel is directly proportional to the effort. That type of price is for a run from Venice to Green Canyon where you sleep through most of the ride, kill the Tuna, then head back. For 4 or so guys I think it's easily a hundo a piece tip. shite load of work to pull that off...tuna in ziplocks.

Talking a 1 day trip with like 5-6 customers and 1 deckhand?
If so I would say a minimum of $20.00 per person.

so is his labor/boat price which is factored in.

Just saying what I think. Everyone tips differently.

It's a tuna trip, when corresponding with the captain he quoted $1200 with up to $800 in gas.

This is to low imho.
The 20% number is right on. Especially if they put the effort in.

I'd say 10-20% for the deckhand,
Captain's pay is really included in the price unless he does an over the top awesome job.
Any suggestions

i think the point in him separating his fuel cost is partly for this type of rationale of excluding his fuel cost from tips and shite.

one day trip, one deck hand, I would go 150-200 including the fish cleaning (maybe a little more if children were involved or he did something above and beyond, or had an overload of fish to clean)
the captain gets my return business and recommendations for his tip

The amount I suggested was for a rig trip we took a couple years ago for snapper and reef fish.
Back at the marina by 3:00 or 4:00. Only 1 deckhand to tip.
The captain who is reputable suggested that amount which he advised was typical. Like I said the number was a minimum.

I think it also depends on how much you expect the DH to do, the guys I fish with are all pretty comfortable on the water and are not waiting around for the DH to bait a hook or get a fish off. We all chip in with the chores and will even man up to the cleaning table to speed things up if we can. If you are expecting to sit back and have the DH fetch beers and make you a sandwich in between untangling your lines and tying up new rigs bc you you are new at this, I would then tip a LOT more

In my book you tip for service of this kind the same way you tip at a restaurant or a hooker, 15% to 20% depending on the quality of the service. And yes, price of the fuel gets counted in the tip.
