Creating a Reef

So let’s pretend that someone had a few salvage offshore boats.
Motors removed, fuel tanks removed.
What’s the penalty for sinking them 40-50 miles out to make your own reef?
I have a sneaking suspicion that the punishment could be severe, but man, how cool would it be to have a wreck all your own?

Well its only going to be there until the next storm comes through.

I've heard of people using various items offshore to make their own reefs. Things like old stainless steel items (use your imagination), rock piles, etc. Those things are easier to hide in a boat headed offshore though. A boat towing another boat out that has no motor, etc is going to draw a little more suspicion.

It's only going to get worse. Roughly 90% of West Delta will be removed in the next five years.

Off the coast of orange beach they sink chicken coops often. They act as reefs. I’m sure there’s a long bureaucratic permit that’s goes with it tho

that sucks that is one of the last remaining rig dense areas.
Theres a service out of OBA that apparently will drop off chicken coops/various items. Not sure if they come to LA waters. I dont know how this works with shrimpers.

All of the shallow Main pass wells are scheduled to be pulled, along with east bay, and the deep (300’) SP 67/70 platforms.

They are going to ruin triple tail fishing as we know it.
Alabama is light years ahead of us on developing Private/Public Reef systems. It is a shame we can't get anything similar to be even considered in Baton Rouge.

Such bullshite that they do this. I wish theyd just drop the whole structure to the bottom. That would make for some wonderful fishing.

Florida sport fishing captains were buying up all of the monel and cupronickel shrimp boat shaft at an auction at Bayou La Batre in 2003 to build pyramid structures to sink offshore the Panhandle. Only each of them had the GPS coordinates after installing them.
