He may have been healthy, but he was a complete dumbass for letting 2 yotes slip up on him in broad daylight.

Only licensed hunters of good moral character are allowed harvest.

I killed a 7 year old buck that had a bite out of its hindquarter.

you might want to sit down for this, but coyotes have been killing deer ever since there were coyotes (and deer)

There's a popular narrative out there that coyotes only kill fawns and old/weak/injured deer. It is said that coyotes pose no danger to healthy adult deer. This story stabs that narrative in the gut.

The story is obvious bullshite from the GA version of LA sportsman, but even assuming it’s true the deer was a yearling.

My favorite part is where two guys holding rifles watched a pair of coyotes eat a deer at 80 yards and didn’t shoot them. I’m guessing what actually happened is ole boy sent one through the hindquarter, and found the deer chewed up the next morning.

We go down to the bottom of the ridge and see two coyotes about 80 yards away. We go to where we saw the coyotes standing, and the same 6-pointer that I saw is dead.

I read more of it than you apparently. Not that I think it’s impossible for coyotes to kill a yearling, but the most likely explanation is this guy shot a small buck and doesn’t want to admit it.

I think it is BS also. What is the antler size requirements in GA? It could be true, but I doubt it. Why isn’t there more blood if it was alive and fighting? Did he clean it to see if anything was wrong internally or disease? I would have gotten video of the bleats that is for sure. I probably wouldn’t have known what the hell it was.

In the days of everyone having a video camera in their pocket, still more videos out there of UFOs and Bigfoot than of coyotes catching grown deer.

Right, if the yotes had killed that deer blood would be everywhere, and all over the hide.

That deer looks like every other one that was left out overnight and coyotes ate the arse out of.

Definitely the case.

The only thing I can add to this is that I talked to a professor at Auburn (I think he was in the engineering department) who said he had a colleague in wildlife or biology or whatever.

So according to this guy, Auburn has some long running ongoing study on coyote scat. And supposedly back in the late 80s when they started the study something like 5% of coyote scat had deer hair in it.

And then sometime in the 90s it became seasonal. There would be a spike in deer hair during the deer season. When lots of wounded and lost deer were available. And then again in the summer when fawns were dropping. But rarely other times of year.

But then at some point it became year round. And that basically coyotes (which weren't in the Eastern US until something like the 1960s) have basically learned how to hunt deer. And now may be hunting deer cooperatively like wolves.

Which if true, then good for them for all I care.

This may be nothing but campfire talk. But interesting nonetheless

We have a ton of yotes on my farm. I haven’t seen any deer decline but no doubt they are getting some. The problem is they are super hard to kill and if you do they may go back in to heat and drop even more. I tried trapping, but apparently I’m not a trapper. We also question if they eat coons. Those bastards numbers have exploded in the last few years. A yearling six point may be an easier meal.
