But then at some point it became year round. And that basically coyotes (which weren't in the Eastern US until something like the 1960s) have basically learned how to hunt deer. And now may be hunting deer cooperatively like wolves.
I don’t think it’s beyond coyotes to learn to hunt deer, but correlation doesn’t imply causality. Deer densities have increased a lot in that timeframe, with 2000 being the best guess as to when populations exceeded pre-colonization numbers after recovery. It’s just as plausible to me that there are now enough deer for them to be roadkilled, diseased, or malnourished year round. That could go hand in hand with coyotes learning a half starved 75 lb piney woods doe is food, but the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

We used to hunt in the Panhandle of Texas, coyotes rule the area and it’s wild.
Never failed that I’d see 3-4 right at daylight after I drove 4 hours to hunt.

I’ve got a trail cam video of 3 coyotes chasing a buck. They’re definitely cooperating, at least sometimes.
I read somewhere that the coyotes that repopulated the east coast in the 60’s came down out of Canada, where they had interbred somewhat with the wolves up there, then started moving their way south. That pack-hunting trait may have been picked up from that interbreeding.

the most likely explanation is this guy shot a small buck and doesn’t want to admit it.
You believe a guy hunting on his own private land accidentally shot a small buck and decided to call the pre-eminent deer hunting magazine of the state to report it, and make up a bullshite story about coyotes? There's better ways to cover up a bad shot than calling Georgia Outdoors Magazine.

No where in the article does it say he was on his own land. If he’s in a club with antler restrictions or on land with permission, people have come up with way dumber stories to avoid being tagged out, fined, or kicked off. He could be making it up for attention.
I couldn’t care less why, it’s just painfully obvious he’s full of shite. His story reads like the dude who robbed the liquor store telling the cops about the guy he saw robbing the liquor store.

Believe that way more then the story he told the magazine. Why even call the magazine if what he says is true? Why take a pic of that buck but not a video of the bleats? Why did he call a 1.5 year old an “adult”? Why isn’t there blood covering the ground? Obviously when he was bleating his heart would have been beating like crazy.
Sounds like the guy that said he had a pic of a mountain lion following a doe with a hindquarter half eaten and the lion was just just following it until it became hungry again. That was BS and why would he say that? Cats don’t hunt like that. Maybe he was misled by someone else, but it was BS nonetheless. The mountain lion “might” have been stalking it because it was going to be an easy meal, but it definitely wasn’t following it just waiting until became hungry again.

They definitely cooperate with each other. I have seen it personally. Not with live healthy deer. I have seen coyotes comb through cutovers and actually push deer out of bedding, but they never pursued the deer they ran out. You could bet your butt if one was injured bad enough they might have tried it. I have seen a pair work a thicket the same way. The thicket was about 50 yards wide and they walked walked the length of it ranging from the edge to about 5 yards in on bothe sides. The same way 2 hunters would, only thing I would have changed in their routine was have one more person to walk dead in the middle of it, but I guess they only had each other to rely on at that time.
As far as the hybridization, I believe it was the Red Wolf they hybridized with some and could have been a lot. I don’t know if the coyotes we have mainly came from Canada or the Midwest. I do think they grew drastically in population because of dwindling Red Wolf numbers/lack of competition.
