How can a river be privately owned?

The land owners own to the banks of the river. The actual river bed is not more than 30 -50 years s wide. Everything else only floods in the lake winter or spring for a few months and is dry ground mist of the year.

Artificial lake made by the state government. The state owns it.

Catahoula being a duck hunting mecca will soon be coming to an end

Trust me, it’s not been a duck hunting Mecca in quite awhile. I’ve been hunting in the lake on and off for 30 yrs and the glory days are long past. There is the occasional day that it can’t be beat but those days are getting further & further apart.

So if they remove the control structure what would be the repercussion of a massive flood. Who would suffer, the land owners or what's below? Or anybody. Was this built for the duck hunters, landowners or cattlemen?

I don't know a lot about that structure, but I don't think it prevents floods. I think it's more about keeping water in the lake.

The outfitter “Honey Break” along with several other outfitters have blinds in Catahoula lake that they hunt often. They have several other places to hunt also

I would assume that structure is also supposed to be seasonally operated, but I doubt it is.

It is. They drain the lake during growing season.

So people have been claiming state water bottoms or claiming people’s private land

The big difference w other reservoirs mentioned is that those landowners were compensated

I use to know one of the surveyors who surveyed the land to build Toledo Bend.
His job was the survey the land being bought out and estimate the cost of the land.
The people were paid for the land plus a small amount of money to move.

Bought a map from him of where the homes use to be.
He said they moved the homes while leaving the piers the homes sat on.
I caught some nice bass off the piers left from the homes that were moved.
