What's your favorite brand/caliber and why?
that's like asking someone who is their favorite kid
I decide what I am going to deer hunt with the night before I go to the lease. Sometimes a .300 Win Mag, sometimes a .243, or could be anything in between, and there's not any particular reason I grab one over the others.

Not a bad choice, being you have one already.
You can share ammo if necessary.
Plain old vanilla 308 or 270 would be my choices.

Tikka t3 308or6.5cr
Heres why
I have known of probably 25 by name and they have all been bullet proof and accurate. I own a 308 and will probably buy a 6.5cr for my next rifle.
308-6.5 ammo is easy to get not going out of style and is capable of killing any animal in North America.
Tikka
Tikka barrels are cold hammer forged and their actions and triggers are crisp and less susceptible to malfunction than other factory and even some custom actions and triggers.
I wouldn’t get a rough tech because they are not Stainless but carbon steel and cerakote.

For me I’d look at a Tikka in .308 or 6.5cm
Those two calibers are the easiest to find right now and either are great deer cartridges.
ETA: just make sure you aren’t buying match ammo.

Plenty good choices. Make sure you buy caliber that is sold routinely….
7-08, 308, 270 are all great options

OP didn’t mention if his son was gay. I was assuming a straight male

I think it's hard to go wrong with most of todays brands, they are all pretty accurate right out of the box. Id take him to see which of the combos he handles the best.

One of my sons hunts with a Savage Axis in .270 with a Nikon scope and it has proven to be really accurate and inexpensive for the combo.

My favorite calibers that I've been hunting with the past few years are the 6.5 grendel, .257 wby, and 7mm-08.
I have more Browning A-bolts and X-bolts than others, but also have a weatherby vanguard that I've been impressed with and a howa mini action with a bell and carlson stock. All are well under 1k.

That is the scope I already have.

I’m guessing your wife tells you who you can and can’t vote for if you think a 6.5cm is gay.

Why kid a kid a niche round for his first deer rifle. Ammo is available online but at $2.50-3 a round.

Get him a badass Marlin 1895 in 45-70 Gov. it’s beautiful and a little different.

No idea what he already has. Would he like an AR-10? Got mine from PSA for like $900, it’s not fancy but absolutely bullet proof and I love it dearly.

If you understood “knockdown power” you would know that pushing a 140gr bullet 200fps faster makes it far superior!!!!!!!

Ruger America Predator in .308.
Has the threaded barrel so he can suppress it if he chooses
