kill the buck. the doe will produce atleast 5-7 offspring in her life, possibly with a big racked gene.

Depends on the place. Some places I've hunted I wouldn't shoot either one. Other places, if either one stepped out I'd drop it.

faxis: is ninja pig dead?

To OP on our place a 4 pt would be an issue. The doe seems a waste but I would have no problems with it. Personally I prefer to drop the old nannys that tend to look right at your stand/you as soon as they walk on a field.

Exactly why some people should not be allowed to hunt!

The 4 point. There are no good reasons to shoot it and plenty reasons not to. The doe is irrelevant.

good reason to shoot it: meat
plenty of reasons not to: your ideals and standards, not everyone hunts antlers

same for bagging the small doe. every now and then someone where I hunt takes a 'one hander'.

This. It depends entirely on who you are and where you hunt. Shoot whatever makes you happy.

The guy that said something about the doe has a semi-decent point. Most of the genetics that control antler growth are determined by the doe, so how do you know which doe to shoot?

quote:

dditionally, even if we could select a "superior" buck, 50 percent of the offspring's genetic information is supplied by the doe, and there is no way to identify the superior doe! Research at Mississippi State has demonstrated doe's are equally, or more important, than bucks to determining the offspring's antler qualities

Much bigger issue with killing the young buck, unless its a kids first deer. The area i hunt is over-run with does, our population is far from 1:1 so id blast away if i was desperate for a kill

Buck/doe ratio has a lot to do with antler size as well.

If you were starving I guess either could be shot.

If you are trying to improve a deer herd I wouldn't suggest shooting either one. You should have plenty of old doe to thin from the herd.

How? All I'm saying is you, along with most hunters in LA, hunt trophies. If someone wants to hunt deer instead of trophies they can shoot whatever they want. But I wouldn't expect you to understand, I bet you cut the line on bass under 5lbs too.

Its called deer season, not 8pt buck over 16in season. Let whoever's doing the shooting decide what's right for them. This should be a non-issue.

If I only want meat I'll shoot does. I understand different people are more or less willing to shoot different sized bucks, but unless it's a kid shooting his first/first few deer, I see no reason to kill 1-2 year old bucks. Most hunters I know would frown upon it. Now there are a bunch of people around where I live who hunt public land with the mentality "if I don't shoot it someone else will." I think it's a shame to see how many spikes and really small bucks are killed here. To me passing on smaller bucks waiting for a trophy is a big part of hunting, otherwise it's just killing. Harvesting meat. And I know quite a few killers, I'm just glad not many of them hunt with me.

What about the old timers who say "we do not and will not shoot doe on this place" and then bitch about not having the bigger bucks like we did "back then" or some other bullshite. Once again, education is key. Deer management has been proven. It is not a theory, it is fact!
