Do you think deer hunting is something that you will be into for a while? I wasn't much of a hunter growing up and was really introduced to it through my in-laws the same as you. when I got my first rifle I went on the cheaper end because I didn't want to spend that much, now I wish I had gotten something nicer the first go around rather than wishing I could upgrade to a nicer gun. I can't quite justify a new rifle purchase now, but it will come eventually.

I am amazed at all of the relatively heavy caliber recommendations. I strongly advise the OP to buy a lighter caliber rifle and become proficient with it before movingon to heavier stuff. I go to civilian shooting ranges periodically and the vast majority of the shooters there have one thing in common...they can't shoot worth a chit. Follow the advise I provided in my earlier post and you will be golden.

I would recommend a Tikka T3. They are pretty easy on the wallet but nice enough that you won't feel you need to upgrade down the road.

Well, I wouldn't recommend to anyone that they use a .223.

I ask this in all seriousness since you recommended a .30-06

Yea Teddy. A .308 Winchester round is just a shortened 30-06 to have a shorter action on bolt rifles.

30-06 = 7.62x63mm
.308 = 7.62x51mm

Look on the the shelf to see what caliber rounds are the most prevelant. Get something in kne of those calibers. I just bought my son a Savage Axis with an entry level Bushnell Scope walk out the door for $356. Very nice rifle. Only problem is finding .243 ammo. I had to order it online.

I would also suggest a rifle with a muzzle brake. Makes it much easier on the shoulder which lends itself to more accurate shooting.

really depends on how much you want to spend...

$300-400 = Remington 700 adl or Ruger American
$400-600 = Tikka T3 or Weatherby Vanguard

Light Loads = .260 or 7mm-08
Heavier Loads = .270 or 30-06

Choose any combo stated above and enjoy!

It also speeds up the exploding of your ear drums.

Ah, I was thinking 338. Been working physics problems all day and my brain is fried.

Carry on.

The first couple times I practice shooting was with a 30-06. It's the gun my father in law had. Very nice gun. I know it is a shotgun, but I liked the 20 gauge I shot at the hunter safety course. Not a lot of kick and eardrums was still intact with my earplugs in. Is their something along the line of a rifle that is about the same?

Also, a lot of my in laws said Ruger American Rifle as well, and I see several on here too.

You can shoot a 12ga slug out to about 50yds reliably. Buckshot maybe 30yds I guess. My quietest and softest kicking long gun is a 50cal muzzleloader to be honest. 30-30 comes next, followed by 270 and then 30-06.

To me, a 30-06 is more of a wham, while a 270 is more of a crack. Don't know if they are all like that, but from the 10 or so of each, that is my way of explaining it.

IIRC, Clames says you can kill a deer at 600yds with a 30-30

Be a fine rifle and you can spend more on a good scope. 30-06 is probably the most versatile round for just about anything you'll hunt which makes investing in a good scope all the more important.

Wrong. I said I could do that. Rest of you peons better let the deer get within 50yds and use something chambered in a belted magnum

I'm gonna chase one down with a framing hammer next time just to spite you

I suggested the Tikka because IIRC, the trigger is adjustable. That will be my next long gun.
