For pure spectacle its hard to beat a smoker king hitting a hardtail under a kite that is 6 feet above the surface of the water! I swear at times it looks like they leave the water 50 yards from the bait....kite fishing is a blast...even without any predators around the bait puts on a show!

Believe it or to large speckled trout are up there for me.
I grew up chasing big trout on Big Lake with my dad. It's exciting as all hell when you see that big ole gold mouth crash into a super spook. We used to catch 5-7 lbers pretty regularly. My biggest was around 8. My dad caught one just over 9.

A peacock blowing up your bait as your about to pull it up out of the water is incredible.

Blue Marlin
Ding Ding. Watching a big blue swatting teasers all lit up and then swallowing the pitch bait within 50 foot of you is biblical.
Best one I ever saw was a huge one going airborne killing big mahi in our spread. She killed and swallowed a Bull dolphin like a snickers bar.
Also, you have the chance on the same trip watching a Yellowfin kill a popper.
So you could see the top two topwater experiences in one boat ride

Small mouth bass in the summertime up north.

Bonitos are shite fish but they school here like crazy and will absolutely fight over a big popper.
I have had some fun stops coming back in and landing in 100's of acres of them

Gonna have to say a Blue Marlin as well just because of the pure adrenaline rush of the setting and fighting a fish of that caliber. Second would be a tie between a big trout blowing up a mirrolure or a largemouth bass hitting a buzz bait or a DevilHorse. Third would be a nasty old Grinnell. Those are typically the byproduct of trying to catch the bass for #2 above. Those things pull like a freight train and act like you owe them money.

Definitely snook. It's a largemouth on steroids. Big Jack Crevalle are fun too on topwater.

Lake Fork during shad spawn is pretty intense with a Zara Spook or Sexy Dog..

I caught two 24’ trout on two casts with a she dog in Fourchon. That was fun but never happened again.
My cousin claims he caught a bunch of magroves on top water in bay Marchand one time.

No matter how many times I see it, that big head shake out of the water and open yellow mouth will make me let out an "oh shite" every time...

but I would like to go to Florida and catch snakeheads on top water also.
Dont worry snakeheads are already in La. I recorded a video of a pair protecting fry last summer on Ms River oxbow.

Surprised no one has mentioned blue fin....those big frickers are some king of athlete when they are lit up. They are also prone to leaving the water completely and attacking a bait from above like a skying king.....awesome sight to behold.

Jacks are stupid fun. I remember going speckle trout fishing and having fun with some jacks on light tackle. Top water sexy dogs and rattle traps.

believe it or not, I've had the same thrill catching a yellowfin, down to big saltwater trout, down to small fresh water trout on top. Just something about the fish coming up and showing itself and being able to watch the eat.
I would think a tarpon or giant trevally would be amazing!
Biggest one that still haunts me was throwing a black super spook in Big Lake on a dark afternoon just after a storm. Looked like someone dropped a bomb in the water. Fish broke me off without ever being able to see it. My mind says it was a shark, but my heart says it was the 9lb trout I was chasing...

Jack Crevalle was the best I’ve seen in person. Fishing the marsh North of Grand Isle. Buddy sight casts at what he thought was some bull redfish cruising by at the edge of our casting range. Well he realizes mid cast that it was a pack of jack crevalle. After the lure lands he starts reeling in as fast as he possibly can as he didn’t have nearly heavy enough gear to handle one. It looked like a submarine launched a torpedo at our boat. Jack grabbed his bait about 10-15 ft away from the boat and promptly spooled him.
I did the same thing on Horn island.i was throwing a surface bait for trout. A jack came barreling through. He looked like a subsurface UFO you see in scifi movies. I don’t think he ever knew he was hooked. Jacks are a so much fun.

For me a Jack is #1. Specs are underrated IMO
But I've caught more than half the bass in my life on a Heddon Torpedo and a frog so I'm a little partial to them too

Bucket list for me is those grouper they call trout in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef. And the second is a rooster fish off a kayaks on west coast South America and baja.
