Depends on what you mean best. High brass #9s or #10s is tough to beat, but it beats you too

12 gauge Federal top gun 1&1/8oz 7.5’s
20 gauge Remington heavy dove 1oz 8’s.
Both of these are on the slow side (1150 fps) but pattern great with modified choke.

This, I have hit some quick 1 box limits with #9’s, but I have also hit some 4-5 box limits with the same shells.

Whatever is available and cheap for the most part. That being said if I had to pick my favorite, it would be 1-1/8 7.5’s

These are what I used on a whitewing hunt in south Texas last year. With modified choke, they worked out very well.

Federal #8 gets it done out of my old Beretta.
I used to love they made the pink breast cancer awareness shells- even easier to find when picking them up at the end of the hunt.

Rio Texas Game Load — 2¾", 3 dram, 1¼ oz of #8 shot.
Pay a little extra and you won’t have nearly as many feathered birds that keep going.
I went the cheap route a few years ago and got on a barrel-burner hunt. I bet I had a dozen birds get absolutely dusted—looked like a feather pillow exploded—only for the dove to flutter another 50 yards into tall grass and thickets, or just keep going.
I went and bought a case of Rios that evening and hunted the next day. When those shells hit, the birds were stone-cold dead every time.

Or the more likely reason is you just shot better the second day, as is the case with everyone.
