I’ve always been a much bigger fan of offshore fishing (who isn’t?)

I’m now lightly toying with the idea of trading in our bay boat for a 28’-31’ rig.

Who has some real world experience with bigger rigs? I mean we fish the Texas bays with good success, but that’d be out.....

I grew up fishing offshore. Just never was the grown up who had to pay for shite.

If you have a lot of time AND money then it is a fun way to go. You can get "hybrid" boats in the close to 30ft range. My biggest issue is that an offshore day generally consumes about two days of work and I don't have full weekends to give up very regularly.

You thinking about mono or cat hull?

For me, it's three days, minimum. A day to get down there and get everything prepped. A day of fishing. And then a day of cleaning the boat, cleaning fish, fixing things that broke, and heading back home.

A more efficient was of doing it would be to set aside 5-6 days. And fish two days in the middle of the trip. With the rest of the time devoted to gearing up and gearing down.

The problem is that young men don't have the money. Middle aged men don't have the time. And old men don't have the piss and vinegar to hit it that hard.

Offshore fishing is a hard mistress.

The gas bill even with $2 gas is too rich for my blood. I can do a week of inshore fishing for less than a day of offshore fishing.

I found out that the offshore guys also want to fish inshore and are willing to take you out in exchange for an inshore trip, that is the angle I would pursue first. A bay boat is so much more versatile to me. I take it in the rivers, the marsh and I plan on near shore fishing this summer at the close rigs.

Who doesn’t like offshore better, but NC hit the nail on the head. Sometimes it’s just easier to charter.

If it were me, I'd be looking at the hybrid models as well. 26-28 ft w smaller twins. Fish both bays and offshore when the weather is right.

Cause I ain't going when its rough.

Cheaper for sure and all that "prep, fixing, etc" isn't your problem.

A larger bay boat, or the hybrid style I have (only 20’) will doing anything inshore and the nearshore rigs for mangroves, and on a decent day, fish for endangered red snapper 25-30 miles out. Charter for blue water a couple of times per year. You’ll come out way ahead on money and time that way.

Absolutely. OP, do the math on this, especially with the gas prices we're about to see.

Truth! I am 60. It doesn’t seem like I’m getting beat up while fishing, but I sure feel it for a couple of days thereafter.

If u got cash...go ahead....ur fuel, bait and ice costs will be eye popping lol...I guess that's why u bring friends for costs...

Texas laws make inshore saltwater fishing kinda sucky. I mean u can catch what, 1 red and 5 trout?....I can see why u want a bigger boat to go ahead and catch snapper, tuna, Ling, grouper etc. So u can catch a nice mixed bag of fish and make a trip worth it.

Move to Louisiana lol....I've never had the urge to go deep v although I have a 23ft because I can catch 50 trout between me and a bud, catch 10 reds and not be far offshore around the different rigs or reefs we fish...

Just curious, what else yall catch other than reds or trout? I never really count flounder cause we not looking for them or even sheepshead for that matter

Are u near louisiana line? Get a la license and fish la waters lol..catch more fish closer to dock lol

Offshore fishing is best when your rich friends have boats or when you charter

125k will get you a nice 15 year old rig with some life left to it.

Good luck finding one with fresh power.

Have a buddy with a 37 freeman, who’s hangs it in LC but lives in king wood. The logistical nightmare of lining up trips would baffle your mind. I guess one day he will slow down but probably not if he keeps his current fishing crew. Your crew is second most important need besides the $$$.

We run a 22' twinvee. Thinking about upgrading to a 26. Much more and your fuel bill gets outrageous.

TV square in my view.

Two years ago in Eastpoint FL and boozed from the Red Pirate, I had a 26 Oceancat rigged and out the door $89,600. It was a steal........pussed out
