Are Colt AR's really worth the money or is it just a rollmark that people pay for?

Grab a gun has this listed for $1400

Are people really paying these prices for a stock rifle with Magpul furniture?

Would much rather just get a S&W for a basic AR

I have a Colt AR10 that's fantastic. It's a little heavy, but it's accurate and reliable.

I have a pre-ban A2 HBAR colt. It’s cool.

For a current colt I’d get an M&P15 for half the price way before I’d pay $1400. I’m sure it’s of good quality, but so is the M&P with a lifetime warranty, (Colt may have LW also, just to say the M&P is a great choice.)

I owned a Colt 9mm AR. I believe I bought new in 2014. The barrel had play in it (castle nut needed tightening) and the bird cage flash hider wasn't even hand tight. It had tool marks all over it. Colt is a shell of it's former self. It's run by investment bankers now. My advice is to spend your money on a Ruger, S&W or BCM.

I’d love to have any snake gun Colt made, but I don’t want to pay the premium. Lots of folks do. Same as their AR I think. My M&P sport is looked at like a piece of junk to one of my AR buddies, that probably has 3x the money in his cheapest AR. My M&P has never failed me so is his really better for a guy like me? Probably, but I’d rather spend the extra 2k on ammo.

That said, I would absolutely pay more for the Colt if I had to have an AR and it was between it and my M&P......but it’s crazy to think about what kind of hunting rifle and scope combo you can put together for that basic Colt.

I picked up a 5.56 from Academy several years ago. I had a Colt M4 as a patrol rifle in my policing days, and the stock Ruger operated as good or better than the Colt.

I suppose there are advantages to owning a Colt, but for a casual shooter like me it's negligible.

Paying for the roll mark these days. Colt has long since subcontracted out just about all of the components in the AR's they sell, the exact same parts you could buy in a rifle from another company and spend hundreds less. Goven how poorly the company has been run I consider that Colt stamp a liability. Hopefully CZ can turn them around.

Technically if people will pay that for it then it's "worth it". Personally I wouldn't pay any more for a Colt than I would any other reputable manufacturer.

A "Colt" AR now is nothing more than an outsourced overpriced M&P or PSA.

The only real difference between those brands now is that PSA and S&W probably actually make most of Their parts in house and Colt doesn't. Colt may also have a chrome lined barrel where those other two won't as standard (although you can buy a "premium" PSA with a damn nice FN barrel).

I would never ever pay $1400+ for that thing. It's actually one of the biggest ripoffs on the entire market. You're not even really buying the Colt name anymore because it's not even really made by them.

For that price range, you can buy an LWRC or FN or BCM or a slew of other far superior brands now. Don't fall in to the hype or reputation. It doesn't exist anymore. There's a reason Colt went bankrupt.

Yup. I looked at Colt AR10, but it just wasn't worth the premium to me over a nice PSA. Picked up a PSA with the Geissele trigger for over 500 less than a Colt. Thing is damn nice.

Also helps I can drive down the road a few minutes and try out all their products too.

I wasn't thinking about buying that rifle. I was just curious to see if I was missing something that was worth $1400. Like you said, there are far better options at that price point.

There isn't just one reason Colt failed.

Lack of quality
Lack of innovation.

An IQ test is not a requirement to own a gun, and the AR world seems to have more people with misinformation than, say, guys who love bolt actions or revolvers.

I got my PSA AR10 for under $900 including shipping and it goes bang every time.

I have a Colt 6940 bought years ago to just have a Colt in the collection. The gun runs great but Colt ignored the civilian market and it bite them hard in the behind. Colt acts like they're the only game in town stuck in the 90s.

If you want a Colt to have one in the collection, its good but if you're looking for a rifle to serve more than a bucket list acquisition, better choices out there.

Didn't they ignore the military market as well and have to sub out a huge chunk of their manufacturing?

My dad has an old Colt SP1 all factory. Supposedly they do not make these anymore. Not sure the value. I need to look up its serial numbers to see what years it was manufactured. I've been meaning to do so, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

ETA: Looks identical to this one:
