re: Are Colt AR's really worth the money or is it just a rollmark that people pay for?

I bought my Colt AR 15, years ago, when it was the only choice you had, if you wanted an AR. It's been fantastic, still super accurate after many thousands of rounds. I think I paid around 1,200 bucks for it, and it's been worth every penny, but if there had been a lower priced option back then, I probably would have bought that instead.

I wouldn't I would mix match good components when they go on sale say a complete upper from BCM or LMT or rainier armsRainier arms or daniel defenseand a cheap lower from psa. Shoot buy two or three lowers for under 250 a pop and u can put some upper when u want to give one to your wife or fam and they can't find any. And this week be a million times better then those $1400 complete plastic crap
Right now psa has some im looking at that are 199.
Over all you will spend about the same bet have better quality parts i personally love the 15" heat shield(free floated barrel) kmr style way lighter and zero chance of burning mentoring gear when you stuff when you set it down or it rubs your legs when walking. Way with the money imo of your going to spend 1400

My first AR was a Colt MT6700 hbar
Paid $999 in 2000. The only full size I own but no doubt a quality rifle. Back then you pretty much just had bushmaster and colt

General consensus is that they are now very overpriced.
I had a 6920 for a while that was a great rifle. Sold it for a nice profit when colt quit selling civilian for a while.
I think the FN15 patrol rifle is what you get if you want an as-issued-minus-giggleswitch AR These days.

Just looked up my dad's SP1 serial number. It was manufactured in 1977.

Does it have the heavier barrel? Those were a couple hundred bucks more expensive, and a good bit heavier. Mine is just the thin barrel one. I bought it around 84 or 85 and it has the rounded handguard like the A-2. I really like the older style better.

I am a Daniel Defense fanboy. Have 5 of their ARs in different calibers/configurations. I know I pay for the name. The S&W I have is my knock around AR and it’s definitely not junk and a pretty good value AR.

Colt SP1's bring good money to collectors. The originals had a larger front receiver pivot pin with screw slots. Earlier AR15-a2 green box guns with preban features- bayonet lug, slab side receiver (no fence around mag button) and no receiver block also are collectable. In the modern market any name brand should be a good shooter. Surf Gunbroker and see the prices of the older Colts. AR should stand for America's Rifle; one of the funnest rifles to shoot. So easy a caveman can shoot it and shoot it well.

I have one of these in the 20" A3 configuration. Great gun.

I'm not sure. I don't know much about ARs as I've only shot two different ones, this one and one other that my uncle built, and never built one myself, so I don't have anything to compare the barrel to.

Look out near the flash suppressor, you should see some stamps there on the barrel. For example, mine says C MP Chrome Bore.
Posted on 3/11/21 at 4:01 pm to auggie
Yeah chrome bore is the best for longevity will last forever unless your shooting a lot and will outload all other barrels despite some people saying they are less accurate all modern upper are generally very accurate with very tight tolerance

I've come to the Conclusion that Chrome bore barrels are kind of a must have for a true SHTF gun.

I bought my complete AR from academy. It’s a windham weaponary and it shoots great.
The rest of my AR’s are Frankenstein’s

Accuracy certainly hasn't been an issue with mine. It's always been a tack driver.

I've got a 6920LE NIB that I've had for over 20 years. I can't say anything about the quality or if it's worth more.

Got a Colt le 6920 looks just like the one in the op for 999 at academy 5 years ago. I don’t shoot it much just a few hogs here and there.. No problems but it is heavier than any other ar I’ve ever held

Nitride is as good or better unless you’re talking about a machine gun. If you shoot out any gun barrel in some Mad Max scenario you’ll have more guns than you can count.

Definitely check into other options..
I bought a Radical Arm AR in January and with several Magpul goodies as well as a Holosun 510C w/magnifier I'm maybe into it 1500..
