Great discussion. I still enjoy a few drinks with buds at the deer camp. More food than drink as I age. But some just don’t have a life beyond the camp and the hunting competition and drinking and pecking order. I want to tell these dudes that hunting isn’t about all that and they don’t need to max out your stress on a kill and then kill the stress with a dead drunk night. And I do. And they listen for a few minutes. I guess we move through stages of hunting as we age.

I’m 52 and party all weekend at the camp. It’s a blast. I really don’t care about the hunting part anymore. I just like to cook , do some camp chores and drink. This is pretty much the attitude of the whole group. It’s cold out in those damn woods. May change my ways if I ever have grandchildren. Doubt it.

My perfect day used to be an AM duck hunt, mid day deer hunt, then back to the camp to watch the 2:30 CBS SEC game while getting started cooking a big meal while others deer hunted. Now my son is on the hunt for his first deer, so we're spending every afternoon in the stand. Everyone in bed by 9ish and it's definitely different. We still have a few late nights of carrying on, but I'm enjoying every day there regardless these days.

I used to belong to a camp that was more of a drinking camp than hunting

Got tired of it

Guys up all night yelling and shooting guns
One guy blew the door off someone’s room
Another guy got in a flat boat 3am hammered drunk and flipped it in the marsh
We had to get out of bed to go look for him. He was passed out in the grass, bleeding from his head. Thought he was dead
Some guys run off with hookers and wives calling me and texting about where their husbands are…

Too old for that

I only drink when I am in the mood to drink. There are days/nights where I am just not feeling it. I think it's a part of growing up...I still can have fun not drinking

This thread reminds me of some damn good memories growing up. My dad died when I was 2 months old. My uncle taught me how to hunt. He was a raging alcoholic but the best turkey hunter I've ever seen. We left a gobbling bird to go get beer one time. I can't even begin to tell you the stories of our hunts. He died 2 years ago. I miss the shite out of him.

Yea the drinking always started early if someone shot something on a morning hunt. Cleaning the deer, cooking breakfast/lunch, drinking. And then football games on until you left for the afternoon hunt. Afternoon hunt called for bourbon!

All I know is I started vacation and hunting the weekend before Thanksgiving. None of my jeans fit now, my liver called uncle 4 days in and the wife is not happy with me at the moment but she is a trooper that put up with 99% more than most. I have a freezer full of meat, a rack being mounted and hopefully a mess of fish to fry after tomorrow morning.

Ready for some sobriety before the next round of Christmas vacation.

I’m in a cycle that I never anticipated. Me and my wife are empty nesters. We find ourselves drinking because there’s nothing else to do. It’s not a problem, just a way to burn time after the workday and during the weekend.

I’m bored with it, but haven’t found an activity or hobby to substitute for it. Oddly enough, I play in rock ‘n roll bands some weekends and rarely drink when I’m playing.

Hunting is a lot of fun and me and one of my boys go quite a bit. I never drink in a stand, but don’t care if others do as long as they’re being safe. It’s the night of day 2 that I’ll burn it down and drink my weight in beer. This usually involves staying up until after midnight. Sunday morning comes early and is really painful.

Like I said, I’m bored with drinking, but haven’t found substitute for it yet. It’s this omnipresent aspect of American adult culture. I tip my hat to those of you who brush the booze aside and carry on.
