I'm looking at possibly buying an old school Ithaca pump chambered in 16 gauge.

It ought to at least make a good squirrel or rabbit gun.

Meh....... They are cool to own but I have no practical use for it. Same for a 20 gauge

It'll be good for anything smaller than waterfowl, realistically, and can even take waterfowl if you can find a hot load and get them close enough. I never reached for the 16 for that, though, always the 12. Good luck finding shells, though. Not just in being able to actually find them, but some shot sizes are not being produced in numbers, if at all, and variety is getting hard to find when you do find shells.

I have an 870 Wingmaster in 16 that my grandpa bought my dad in the 60s that he gave to me that's pretty much relegated to the "I'll kill you if you try to take this gun from me because it means so much, but I'll have to beat you to death with it instead of shooting you" pile. It's put a lot of food on the table, but I don't see it putting any more.

Yes, I have a couple of old Mossberg bolt action 16ga shotguns and a Sweet Sixteen as well. I only have maybe 2 boxes of shells though.

Reading articles about shotgunning in past - like 70-80 years ago. It was much better thought of then. Before wads had the cup around the shot load, it was considered the best 1 oz shotshell bc the shot load was square.

Shells are a little harder to find but there are def out there

I have a 1961 Sweet Sixteen,,,,once a year I bring it out to shoot some doves,,,,,I don’t pass steel shot through it, but if you could still shoot lead I’d shoot ducks with it.

I have a Sears bolt action 16ga. my Father gave me years ago that was given to him by his Dad shortly before he passed away.I recently lost my Father a few months back and I gave it to my 14 year old son a few weeks after my Dads passing. He was missing his PawPaw something awful and was completely devastated. He wanted something that belonged to his PawPaw and I felt like the timing was right to pass it along. I came home the other night and he asked if I would take it out of the gun safe so he could keep it in his room. He has several other guns in the safe but has never asked to keep any of them in his room before so I told him that it would be fine but to first let me get him a small safe for his room to keep it in. He said he already had somewhere to safely put it before leading me to his room to show me where he had in mind.. He had already taken some spare wood out of my shop and built himself a single gun rack so it could placed above his bed. He's a great kid but I was never able to interest him in helping me with wood working projects out in my shop despite trying to many times.I had to step outside for a bit to compose myself knowing that keeping his PawPaws gun in his room with him all the time meant that much to him.Sorry for rambling but I just wanted to share that story.

My first shotgun was a Mossberg 16 bolt when I was 13 or 14. I shot everything with it. Went deer hunting with a 16 slug but didn't shoot anything. I doubt anyone makes a 16 slug today.

I killed many doves with it believe it or not. I could work that bolt about as fast as I could my next gun which was a 870. I still have both guns. I took the Mossberg to the skeet range a few years back just for kicks and I can still hit with it. It is a heavy gun.

I would like to have a 16 O/U or Browning auto now that I am older and hunt birds almost exclusively. I wonder how 16 ga steel does on ducks??

I have a 1938 Auto 5 that only takes 2 9/16 shells that I hunt doves with. I buy the shells several cases at a time from a company that makes them especially for this gun.

The gun almost looks mint and handles like a wet dream.

Still use one about 30% of time even on ducks.

Back in led shot era used a 16 exclusively

Buy it. I have a 50 yr old Ithica 16 ga pump that ejects the shells from the bottom. Love it. Great rabbit gun. Was good for ducks with lead shot. Haven’t been duck hunting in 30 years. So, I don’t know how effective it is with steel shot. You can get shells for doves and rabbits at Cabelas, Walmart, and Academy. Federal makes #1 buckshot (great for home defense). Bought some from Midway USA 5 or 6 years ago for about $3.50 per box of 5 shells. But the shipping costs added about $1.50 per box. Probably much more expensive now.

I have two of them, both Winchester Model 12's. It is what I use to hunt rabbits because it's lighter than my 12 Gauge and easier to maneuver with when i walk through brush.

One of them was my grandfather's shotgun that he gave to my dad and then my dad gave it to me when I was 15 or 16. The other one belonged to one of my grandmother's brother's and was given to me when my great uncle's wife died back in 2005.
